Sep-15-01, 04:37 AM (EST) "Major Request: To all route designers..." Could you PLEASE indicate in the FILEID.DIZ description, how large (in MB) the route is, when all files are added, I only have limited HD space and don't want to spend an hour downloading a route to find it will not fit the HD.Please, if possible, use .txt format, as they can be read inside the train-sim "view" files area.ThanksEuston

Sep-15-01, 10:37 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Major Request: To all route designers..." I actually have 1.27Gb left, but I keep the 1Gb free as it is drained by my MSTS route builder. Thus I have about 0.27Gb to play with.Euston

Sep-15-01, 10:43 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Major Request: To all route designers..." But the problem isn't the route itself. The problem is the copying of objects into the route. So any route you download is going to balloon. I don't know how any of us can get around that unless someone creates a routine that can go out and grab only the objects the route needs. So I automatically figure any route I choose to download is going to be at least 350 megs. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-15-01, 06:23 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Major Request: To all route designers..." The only way I have found so far is to only write a Batch file to copy the files you need.My Valley line has 300Mb of files copied of which 290Mb of them are probably not used, sof for the little route I am creating right now I am only copying files I use.The install size right now is around 10Mb and the zip file with the extra SD files is a whopping 400Kb........ okay it would ahve been at the time of the Rodmine 20 Plus hard drive a mate had sitting under his Apple Mac Plus.Niall Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-15-01, 11:09 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Major Request: To all route designers..." Not a bad idea, tho, so I will. All you guys downloading this stuff try to remember we're all a bunch of ametuer hackers, stumbling around in the dark and learning this as we go, so suggestions like that are real helpful. When I upload I include the download size and required disk space in the description box, but if you look at Port Ogden and Northern V 3.1 in the file library, the "requires MSTS full install and 300 mb disk space" isn't up there, got lost in the internet zone between servers or something. So yeah, great tip, I'll put it in the readme as well so it'll be obvious wherever you look. Got a tip for you too, new hard disks are going for 80 to 130 bucks these days. I got a 40 gig 7200 rpm ata100 for 130 at circuit city. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-16-01, 00:35 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Major Request: To all route designers..." I don't mean to get controversial here... but get this. When these guys/gals come out with their super looking loco's, do they include fancy installers? No! Do they include batch files? No! Do they expect us to use Windows Explorers to copy cab and sound folders to the new engine folder? YES!! Rewrite s and d files with cryptic looking references that could get us in trouble with the FBI?? DOUBLE YES!!! So why in the world are we breaking our necks to do the same thing, THEY DON'T!!! *panting from excitement* Just had to get that off my chest. But I don't see anywhere near the complaints about fancy install routines missing,in the other forums, like we do here! You know what I think? I think it's a fancy plot to keep us off guard doing fancy installs while they get all the glory with their fancy repaints and engines!! It's the Boston Tea Party all over again!Film at 11...Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-16-01, 01:02 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Major Request: To all route designers..." LAST EDITED ON Sep-16-01 AT 01:19 AM (EST)Take it easy Rich, your safety valve is hissing. Yeah, I know what you mean, but this guy's suggesting, not complaining, and it is a good suggestion. Routes take up a lot more space than rolling stock, and there's a lot more things that can go wrong with them, which is why there's only about a dozen routes built from scratch available so far, and almost a thousand locos and cars, and hundreds of activities. So we're gonna get a bit more flack, less of us, more problems. If you do get criticism from somebody, like someone says your route don't look realistic, just say yeah, I agree with you a hundred percent sir, so why don't YOU fire up the editor and show me how it's done? That usually shuts that type up, and you never hear from them again. That said, I have every route available so far on my disk, my MSTS has grown to 4.3 gigabytes including new engines, cars and consists, and I got a wide variety of stuff to play with on a wide variety of routes. Even if you're not tech savvy, Western Digital has an almost idiot proof install setup and instruction sheet, and if all else fails their tech support guys are friendly, patient, and knowledgeable. (I really dumbed out, hooked the new ATA 100 to the IDE slot, been building my own computers so long I figured I didn't need the instructions, but the guy didn't mind at all) And at 80 bucks on up they're dirt cheap, when you consider my first hard disk I paid 500 bucks for a 20 meg (megabyte, not gigabyte, O my children, back in the days of DOS and dinosaurs) "hard card", a disk bolted onto an 8 bit ISA slot card. Windows 3.0 full install ate up 15 megs of the 20. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-16-01, 08:29 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Major Request: To all route designers..." Don't mind me, I was just having some fun. I stuck that well inside this thread thinking nobody really would see it. I think it all a bit amusing. It's not that much extra work to add the installation stuff anyway, once you got it down how it needs to be. But really, I was just pointing out the irony is all.
