Aug-30-01, 12:20 PM (EST) "Forests - "Which way do we go?" - Experience Needed..." Okay, I've been struggling with forest creation in my route. On the one hand, you have a plethera of suggestions on this forum to use the "Forest" type objects (the ones in the red bounding boxes), as you can see from this shot of my route below:Example of using multiple forest objects to "plant" trees along a route:
HOWEVER, when I cruise the Marias Pass in the Route Editor, I notice that KUJU employed the use of some Tree/Forest shapes (infact QUITE a large number), and created the route to look like this:Marias Pass segment showing alternative "foresting" method:
MY PROBLEM, is that I like the track-side visuals created by the KUJU method much more than the visuals created by the first method. However, I am concerned about potential frame-rate hits, or problems with object memory in placing such details on a route already heavily detailed with objects. What do YOU think? I find Marias' forestation quite satisfactory--the illusion works. If you find that either one is visually satisfactory and your concern is with the frame rates, then travel both routes and see which is better.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-30-01, 01:39 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Forests - "Which way do we go?" - Experience Needed..." I use a combination of both. What I typically do, and this isn't in all areas, is to use the forest object up close and use the billboard type objects in the distance. It gives a spatial quality. The forest objects are good for a 3d representation, but the billboard types show their flatness up close.Depending on how thick the forest is to be will be how dense I make the forest object. So I'll use a 300-600 and then a billboard tree object in the background for instance.I don't know about the frame rate issue, not sure what really affects it.
