Aug-29-01, 11:12 PM (EST) "Marker Problems. Way Way Off." Tonight while laying track on my Clinchfield route. I was finally convinced that there is a problem between the terrain and markers. I suspected this for sometime while toying with other routes and have briefly read other posts about it on the forum, but tonight it was finally proven to me beyond a shadow of a doubt. From my estimates (on my route) its off roughly 200 Meters to the north. Possibly shifted to the west some too but I can only confirm that its shifted to the north. How did i come to this conclusion? Well, while laying track to along the Nolichucky River, in the Nolichucky Gorge, it is supposed to cross from the north bank, to the south bank at Unaka Springs. Well, I marked each end of the bridge, using lat long points from Topozone.com also confirmed it with Topo USA. Then I made markers to mark each end of the bridge in the marker file. My manually added markers for the ends of the bridge fit in perfectly with the markers generated with the marker gen program. Well, to my dissapointment, the track never crosses the gorge, the bridge remains on the north bank, if this makes sense. The bridge is marked and is there, but the markers are high up on the side of the mountain on the north bank and it never makes the crossing, its shifted far enough to the north that it just continues along the north bank high up on the mountainside. This is also confirmed by looking at the spot elevation for the points too. Which is much higher than it really should be for that particular lat/long point. Makes sense seeing how all the markers are riding higher up on the mountainside. Question is . What factors caused this much of a difference. The datum is North American 1927. Maybe thats the answer right there. I've seen estimates from others of it being off about 30M but from what I can tell, its off 200M. Definately off the width of the gorge. How can this be fixed? I'm guess I could wing it. I guess that's the only choice I really have. I wish there was a way i could manually adjust the terrain to make it match up with the markers. Any ideas? Maybe I have missed a breakthrough post. Best Regards,

Aug-30-01, 08:40 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Marker Problems. Way Way Off." I have the same problem. Try this it might help. If you go to www.topozone.com for topo maps and microsofts terrazone for aerial photos you can get pretty close using the markers for just a reference, Still requires some trial and error. Aug-30-01, 09:55 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Marker Problems. Way Way Off." I too, am working on the Clinchfield, currently the north end. So far, I have found the markers to pretty close. Since the slightest twitch of the mouse may offset a manual marker by several meters, so far, I am only using manually read markers to indicate the approximate location of turnouts, tunnel portals, milesposts, etc.To do a good job, you need to have track charts of the area your are working in. Unfortunately, I have the charts for your area, but not in transmissible form. From these charts, you can find the lineal order of the curves. By comparing the chart to a topomap, I am able to locate mileposts within probably a couple hundred feet +-. The charts indicate the degree of the curves and whether left or right going up in mileposts, i.e. south. I only have a small scanner, but if you can give me the milepost range you need, perhaps I can trace off portions of the chart, scan and e-mail them to you.J. H. Sullivan, P.E. LAST EDITED ON Aug-30-01 AT 10:15 AM (EST)Would you happen to have any charts of the Western Maryland Connellsville Sub between when Chessie took em over until they abandoned it around 83? A friend of mine who is a CSX engineer gave me some hand drawn charts of the CSX Keystone Sub. Im doing the WM from Connellsville to Cumberland and figured while I was at it I should just add the CSX / Ex B&O up the other side of the Youghiogheny River over sandpatch grade into Cumberland. Mainly I need just the locations of the WM passing sidings and such. Have got the main figured out between topo maps, aerial shots and being able to scout out the bike trail.
