Aug-29-01, 07:18 PM (EST) "Solution for those having problem with CombObj installation" LAST EDITED ON Aug-29-01 AT 07:52 PM (EST)LAST EDITED ON Aug-29-01 AT 07:27 PM (EST)I think I've found part of the problem and solution for those having problems executing JMSteven's CombObj batch file.Cause - The batch script was having problems with using the double quotes around the long path names. It was trying to create the directory "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator"\Merge. Note that the \Merge is AFTER the double quotes which will not work.Solution - Before you run the batch file as instructed by Jim, first manually create the MERGE subdirectory in your Train Simulator directory.EDIT: Well I spoke to quick. It seems like this isn't the whole fix.. The batch script seemed to go to execution without giving the error messages but there are only two files in the MERGE directory....Back to the drawing board. Sorry for the misleading Subject line. I don't know how to just delete a post. Here is the DOS screen I used (via RUN -->%ComSpec%
And here is the error message I received in the output log"Output Log opened. Script progress messages will appear here
Command line was (combine) (combine) ("C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator") (-r)
The path ""C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator"" is invalid
Output log closed.
**************************(END OF OUTPUT LOG)**************************"I do NOT have an invalid path as shown in the output log. This is the default directory of the MSTS install. Anyone have any ideas? Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-29-01, 09:14 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Solution for those having problem with CombObj installation" Okay CajunRon
I got the #%$@@$ thing to work... Here's what I did, maybe you can try this....Start - Programs - find your MS-DOS Prompt icon, usually
in your Accessories Directory, and right click on it.
Select "Properties", click the "Memory" tab and change the
top left box that says "Auto" to "640", then change the top
right box from "Auto" to "2048".
Now click on the "Program" tab and in the "Working:" line
put this: "C:\program files\microsoft games\train simulator\utils\CombOb"Or whatever your install was for your sim.....
Next in the "Batch file:"
line put this: combine c:\progra~1\micros~1\trains~1
Again, this will depend on your install directory structure.
I could not get it to run with the long file names. I had to
use the short names that DOS can read.....I really hope this works for you, as I have been messing around
with this script for 2 weeks it seems trying figure out where
I was going wrong.....Patrick Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-29-01, 10:44 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Solution for those having problem with CombObj installation" Thanks a whole bunch for your perseverance Patrick.
Could never have gotten it to work without your input. For anyone else out there that wants to try camaro540's solution to this problem, if you're using the full path name "d:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\UTILS\CombObjs" (d:\=drive)don't forget to take out the last two letters of the folder CombObjs or it won't fit into the Working dialog box of the "MS-DOS Prompt Properties" box. Also think it's a good idea to make a copy of you're original MS-DOS Prompt shortcut first. After the copy is edited, rename it somthing like "MS-DOS Prompt for MSTS Objects Combiner" or somthing shorter if you want.Richard

Oct-01-01, 12:12 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Solution for those having problem with CombObj installation" All these posts are all well and good but I am still getting error messages. Would anyone have the patience to help an old man like me with some kind of sensible example of the command line to use in order to get this thing to work? I am getting desperate. Oct-01-01, 09:08 PM (EST) 9. "I've got it!" Ye Haw! I finally got this bugger to run. Here's what I did.Open the "Combine.bat" in wordpad. Do a empty replace on the string "\nul" (without the quotes)This will effectively remove all the "\nul" from the file. Save it... Then run the bat file.Vole! Rotts of shapes and goodies.Seems like it was choking on the "\nul" on the end of the paths.Good luck.Roger Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
