Aug-25-01, 09:19 AM (EST) "Trashing Route, for 16th time :)" Yep, like I said in my last post, I laid my track and it's like riding a roller coaster. My rolling stock has been destroyed by driving it through the Au Sable River - I can't seem to tweak the tile water height properly. And the markers are way off.*sigh* I guess the bright side is that I've never had a problem with the DEM extractor. Although I wonder if the errors introduced by converting to the XYZ files are significant enoough to cause the markers to be off by as much as 30-50 meters, which they are. So what I guess I'll do is either walk the route with my GPS receiver, or use DRG's instead of data files and "guess"-timate where the tracks/roads go. Not too difficult, if only I can get the river to stop flooding my tracks LOL.So I'll throw it away and start all over, but only use the markers as a *very* rough guide. My next route (which I'll never get to at this rate) will be the amtrak routes through Vermont. Ever see a topo of Vermont? They don't call it the Green MOUNTAIN State for nothing. Oh joy, Oh rapture; anyone know how deep the Waterbury and Winooski Rivers are....?Bruce

Aug-25-01, 11:24 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Trashing Route, for 16th time :)" Hi BruceI once loaded these markers converted from the mif file and they were hundreds of meters away from my track, which I had laid according to markers I had measured by hand from a real map. I also checked were the mif markers lay on my map and they were certainly not exactly on top of the track. So this data is just not detailed enough. The marker interpolation gives the feeling having very detailed data, which isn't true.About the crashes: 1.) I don't put any signals, platforms, sidings and carspawners until the most of the track routes buildings and vegetation is placed. These are always lost when a "crash" occurs.
2.) I run the rebuild database feature everyday I start working on my route.
3.) Of course I backup daily too
4.) I save and quit the program when the first black screen appeared (low memory) and restart it afterwards. That occurs every half an hour with my 512 MB of RAM. (Ridiculous)With this, I had no crash for about one week
Hope this goes on that way!Regards,Dan Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Trashing Route, for 16th time :)" >> With this, I had no crash for about one week You mean the sim, not route editor, right?I haven't never seen any black screens in it, but it hangs my computer 10-20 times a day. It works only 1-30 minutes at a time.I would be happy if that crashing could be ended. Will the route editor crash the whole computer in Win2000, does anybody know? I hate to restart and wait for scandisk 10 times a day.Enocell Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-25-01, 12:08 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Trashing Route, for 16th time :)" Enocell,I mean the route editor. I run it on Windows 98SE. The black window appears when you select a menu or similar things. The program sometimes hangs when I leave it, but I can end it with ctrl-alt-delete. It's already listed as not responding then. I have no program hangers during work, if I leave it before it hasn't enough memory. Though my system still has over 100 MB of 512 free, the editor starts having problems after about 30 minutes.
As the route grows, I think I have to restart the program sooner. You can end scandisk manualy, though that will leave your disk with errors.Dan Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-25-01, 01:42 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Trashing Route, for 16th time :)" Just a behind-the-tech-idea.I think most of us who have tried to build bigger programs in windows knows this memory problem. Some call it trashing other talks about slicing memory. What basically happens is that ANY windows program reserves memory as it goes, so everytime you load a object or tile in the editor a new section is reserved. Then when you go along some things are flushed again, but not in the same sequence as they were reserved, so now you got the memory fragmented into many small pieces seperated by small amounts of usefull data.It seems like frequent saving in the editor gives some chance of cleaning up (more pieces can be flushed when they are saved), but if the split up of the memory get's over the top then ANY running program can crash (including the windows system tasks) when they need a big chunck of memory. In fact all programs under windows creates these problems, but the key to keep it under control is to try and guess how much memory is needed and the reserve in biger blocks. Unfortunally there havn't been given much effort in the editors..BTW: There's an old windows advice that says you have to restart windows every 4 hours during normal use..Greetz.

Aug-25-01, 12:13 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Trashing Route, for 16th time :)" HiI've seen these black screens, and cacheman shows no mem, no virt mem, and then yor almost to the danger zone..... It seems to me that a save should empty the mem so you could keep goin. After a save and restart you have plenty of memory, don't make sense to me, course, a lot of the editor stuff don't make sense.... 256 mem..384 virtual mem P3850Regards
Bob
