Aug-24-01, 07:47 PM (EST) "Im SO Confussed" OK, So I just want to thank everyone here... I just got back from the Eye Doctors office and Best Buy.... Seems my contacts were fused to my corneas from all the post reading I was doing here in the forum... Best Buy was for a new 17 inch monitor so I can read everything in bigger fonts... did you know there is special area within windows to make everything bigger for those of us who cant see any more.. Ok, I know that was all a bad Joke...On the the point of this message..I literally have gone nuts trying to absorbed all this information on the Route Editor.. But alas have gotten so confused with the threads and links to other areas that I have gone bug eyed... What are the chance's of a group of the wizards who know all, and are trying to tell all about our new found toy , to consolidate and celebrate all this info into some sort of detailed FAQ or instruction manual...Sybex's book only scraps the subjects and does nothing to help those of us who are surely getting into this software headlong...
I am spending more time debugging my mistakes from trial and error then playing with the trains I want to create and run. I know, I know, I'm asking for allot here.. but perhaps a group in a combined effort could take all this and make it simple for the rest of us. And to be honest, sometimes it gets really hard to follow the threads, they start out on a subject, then sometimes go off on a different tangent entirely.I must say.. that I do very much appreciate the efforts of those who know this software inside and out so far.. the stuff I have gotten out of it has been a great help... but some kind of chapterized and indexed FAQ or even dare I say "Written and Published" aftermarket manual would make life so much easier! or maybe I am just being like an 8 year old on Christmas Eve and being impatient.. but hey, wouldn't it be much easier if I wanted to find out exactly how to install a switch or a grade crossing to just look it up in the index and go to that page and find step by step directions on how to do everything I want to do to create what ever it is that I want to create. When I got MSTS it was by accident, I didn't even know it was on the market. I have for as many years as I can remember been a railfan. My Grandfather was a conductor on the Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Northern railroad in Waterloo Iowa while I grew up. And have always wanted to model that line exactly as I remember it from the caboose window. Unfortunately, due to the fact that I would have to have a warehouse in order to model it in HO scale to the degree I would like.. But now thanks to those Wiz's in Washington state and where ever Kuju is.. I can model it here on my computer and have the whole route. And to do this I even went out and bought a new computer just to run MSTS exclusively. nothing else inhabits this puter but MSTS.My Girlfriend and my kids think I have lost all sense of reality when they find me still up at 7 am messing around on MSTS. But hey, I dig this software and I want to make the WCF&N Rwy Co. be part of my life again, even if only on the puter.. I can see my Grandfather throwing a switch at the John Deere Tractor main assembly plant in downtown Waterloo, waving the lantern to signal to the Engineer to proceed back with empty flat cars to spot in the loading bays.. Ahhh memories.. Sorry now I drifted off the subject thread..Lets hear some comments on my suggestion and I will be bold and say that if people think this can be done.. I would be willing to help out in what ever form I can help out even if it means having to get another new prescription for my glass's, Or hey, let me know if I am way off base with this idea... It cant be all that bad after all.. 5 years ago.. we didn't have MSTS and I wondered if we might ever have such a critter while I was flying a NWA 747 out of SEA in MS Flight Sim 98. And at one point even considered going to school to learn how to write code so I could develop my own rail sim software. Thanks for reading my ramblings!.Sincerely,

Aug-24-01, 10:20 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Im SO Confussed" I don't know, kind of glassy eyed myself.I've posted some of the answers early on, but being out of country for three weeks I fell way behind. Also, I don't think anybody was listening anyway. It would be nice to have all of this information collected, collated, and indexed.By the way, hang in there. I finally got all of the track laid for the Virginia and Truckee here in Nevada and I'm starting to work on scenery. Its not easy, but it has been worth it. And if you've ever done any model railroading, you know its important to do bite size sections, operate for a while, then build some more. It keeps the interest up.Well, good luckJW

Aug-25-01, 01:06 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Im SO Confussed" Here's a couple of suggestions. Somebody is doing a picture tutorial and it wasn't but just a few days ago he posted the link on how to do tunnels and a couple of other things. I can't recall the topic so you'll have to hunt it down, maybe somebody else will remember.Plus, check out my route help 2 Q&A. It's in the misc library here. It's not a tutorial but it covers enough. There's also an activity Q&A thing I uploaded. But lemme say this. Too many folks here I quitting doing the routes too quickly. Everything in a route is downright tedious because we're working with miles and miles. Whether it's track or scenery, you'll be putting miles of it down. But it's not hard to do either. Things like tunnels and bridges get easier after you get a couple. Yep, for the first time or two it can be a bit frustrating, but if you just do it, then you'll get through it. There are a few things that will get you to tear your hair out though. Like, what it takes to get a route every body can share to work.So don't talk yourself out of doing your route because the editor is so undocumented. Plenty of us are doing it. Good luck!
