Aug-23-01, 11:11 PM (EST) "Tunnel trouble" I have beew working all day trying to create a tunnel - it is a long one, through terrain that was successfully created with the DEMEX and related software. For the history interests, this is the Sandy Ridge Tunnel, about mile 33 on the Clinchfield. The north portal is at 560 meters elevation, and the south portal at 562 meters, and it is 2394 meters long - straight as a rifle bore, when completed in 1915, the ends met in the center with an error of less than 1 inch. Now the problem. Laid the tangent up to the north portal - no sweat, located the south end of this tangent at 560 meters, and directly in line with the marker which I added to my marker file to denote this point - measured off of the appropriate topozone map image. Then I started laying pieces of 100meter straight tunnel, and the first 4 or 5 went fine. I even adjusted the grade slightly up, figuring that once I had the whole thing done, I would fine tune it to smooth it out. However, this is the problem, the next piece, although it is the same shape as the others, would not line up on the last piece to save my soul. It shows up much larger than it should, making me assume that it is closer to the camera than it should be, but moving around the camera does not help. Any ideas on this??Next Question: The placement window has values for x,y,z when you place the element, and I have been assuming (on the old Southern this was spelled ASS/U/ME) that the y coordinate was the elevation. Seems to be the case on the object window anyway. However, the object window has the same coordinates, and also it has an altitude and an elevation window. What are these for--I have found that if I set the altitude to ZERO, the camera is at rail level, and by doing this, I have line the tunnel up to be directly under the path of the markers. I note that as the tunnel progressed, one of these values got more negative - it is indicating the distance below ground level? Near the mid-point of the tunnel, the bore is about 800' below ground level. One of the unusual things about this tunnel is that it was bored without a center shaft, not the usual thing for one this long.In addition, at some point, it would be nice to have some 1000 meter tunnel sections, someone is bound to want to do the Mt.McDonald tunnel sooner or later.
