This question has probably been ask before. Is there a tutorial for making terrain from dem's. There is a certain shortline I would like to model and I've tried to use dem's with absolutly no luck. A tutorial in plain language would be a plus. Frank
Rich Garber has a DEM/terrain tutorial at his site... http://www.edmfamily.com/msts/index.htm though you may have to contact him to find out exactly where he keeps it by emailing rgarber@vnet.net. He's asking a nominal fee ($5) for a 50 page PDF file. You will also need a program called DEMEX from... http://www.digital-rails.com/index2.html There is a free demo available, but the full program will only set you back $20 (US).Essentially, you use Route Editor to create the flat tiles for the area you want to model and then DEMEX to recreate them with terrain information. The longest part of the process is actually downloading the DEM's for each quadrangle of terrain you need, but those can be found free at various sites on the web. You can use the USGS site for the DEMs. A visit your state government site may also help as each state tends to have the DEMs for their own territory.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century! www.kelticsylk.com
