I was able to learn the transfer technique shared with me here by Bob and outlined in Wayne Campbells tutorial at http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/13024.html and http://www.steam4me.netI don't know if I have it exactly right, but it seems as though the scale on the topo maps I have works out to be 128 pixels to the kilometer. This is the "test" 512x512 tranfer I made...

I used the grid snap to place it. The hardest part was figuring out where the center would go so that it lined up with some markers I placed. You can see the actual track for the PRR bridge over the Conemaugh at the bottom right of the transfer. It seems pretty slick the way it follows the contours. It really helps the visualization. I need to polish the technique quite a bit but it already helps a great deal. I left the texture uncompressed because I want to try something with the Draw tool.I did throw a bridge accross the Little Conemaugh for The B&O tracks east of here. I used a section of scale rail to see what that looks like. I'm having trouble telling how many tracks run over the river and under the PRR main. It seems to be three. One thing I hadn't really appreciated was the vast size of the area I'm working. I thought I might be able to see the B&O bridge from the JTC bridge at Railroas Street. It's too far way.The only other progress was extending the terrain further south into the Ferndale area (another three tiles). It ended towards Southmont and I wanted make sure I could run the JTC all the way into Ferndale. I think now I'll be able to incorporate the B&O trackage all the way to Riverside and end it in that tunnel. Thanks for all the help...My admiration for you real route builders grows with every painful step.Frank MusickSaving America into the 19th Century!

RE: Agony Eastern: Transfers

I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful. I have these maps and airphotos scattered all over my L&PS route. I just shrink them to 1m x 1m and leave them in place in case I need them again later. Every now again I stumble on one laying on the ground under a tree or beside the tracks. Its a funny sight.Wayne

RE: Agony Eastern: Transfers

I had located one in the wrong place and didn't delete it before I inserted a second one in the correct position....I had to zoom in and hunt for that little triangle I'm not sure I have the scale just right. That piece of tracl looks awfully big. What I did was make a square 128x128 and match that against the scale on the map. It looked the same size as the 1 Kilometer on the scale. So then I used the rectangle select tool and grabbed a 512x512 chunk of the map. I'm thinking that's 2 square kilometers (math whiz I am not)Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

RE: Agony Eastern: Transfers

If I'm reading you correctly, you're saying that 128x128 = 1km x 1km, or 1 square kilometer. But since 512/128 = 4, you actually end up with a 4km x 4km area, which comes out to 16 square kilometers.Big difference! Maybe that's your scaling problem?Alex StroshaneAgony Eastern: Transfers – image 4

RE: Agony Eastern: Transfers

Talk about dumb!!!Yes you are absolutely right! The bitmap should actually be 256 x 256. God knows what I was thinking.I'll bet it will look a lot better after I change that...Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

RE: Agony Eastern: Transfers

FWIW, the 0.3m Ortho imagery is roughly 1 pixel = 1 foot (there's also 0.6m, 1m and larger imagery, but most are 0.3m or 1-foot). Cut out an area 420 x 420 pixels and resize up to 512 x 512 (or down to 256 x 256). In-game transfer size would be 128m x 128m (one square) and would then match MSTS scale. Cheers!

Click to send message via ICQ

You might try pressing the "/" (forward diagonal) which will let you go underground, then move under the transfer and you should be able to see the green button somewhere there.RobertR .. ADF-M&RM at http://www.adfrr.com

RE: Agony Eastern: Transfers

hey I figured out that the tag to grad the transfer object is in the middle of the object. And I do not know if this will help anyone else besides be but I placed a red box in the center of all my transfer object so I can easily find the tag. I know it will really help me when Iam start placing builings and roads in downtown Raleigh.

Red squares will work!!When I first started messing with these, I too kept loosing the ‘transfer handle’ as well. I started to mark the transfer centers with yellow circles…, but after awhile that became tedious when dealing with a bunch of ‘real estate’ images. So I just positioned the ‘handle’ above the terrain a couple hundred (scale) feet and cut out a couple of other steps in the process.Hope this helps.Have a sparkling day.
Bob(EDIT) PS: Brocker, you could almost get some pretty interesting terrain textures from your Ariel shots.

RE: Agony Eastern: Transfers

I was thinking abotu trying to play around with using some of transfer images as terrain textures. But right now between work and other things I do not have myc time to deal with the route. A man get pretty tired after working 60-70 hour weeks and this is suppost to be the slow season. I was also wondering if someone could possibly make a few buildings for me later on down the road. Not sure what I could do in return but if someone could, please keep me in mind if needing some objects to create in some spear time.
