Aug-22-01, 08:57 PM (EST) "Placing item (Track) at correct altitude??" I am working on a relatively simple piece of the Clinchfield at the N. End of Sandy Ridge Tunnel. It is a straight tunnel, 7854' or 2394 meters in length. The N. End floor, i.e. track, is at an altitude of 550 meters, while the S. End is at 562 meters. My question is this. I had no trouble laying the first few hundred yards of track, including a RH turnout, but I cannot determine if this track is placed at the correct height or altitude. The S.End of the piece should be at 550 meters to meet the tunnel floor, and it descends slightly to the north, about a 1% grade. I used the DEM extractor quite successfully to create the terrain, and visually it looks correct - this is an area of my former employers property that I am quite familiar with.So hoow do you determine the altitude at which you are placing an item. Or putting it another way, can you set the altitude at which an item is placed. Now, I realize that fitting the grade will be sort of trial & error, but fixed points should be placed at their known elevations I would hope.I also do not find a tunnel portal shape in the library, so I assume that this is something that must be constructed - which is fine, the CC&O used smooth face concrete portals for the most part.J. If it is attached to another track section it will only pivot up and down. You'll notice that the altitude should change as you swing the track section up and down. The altitude is the altitude at the free end of the piece of track. Using basic trigonometry (you're an engineer...) you can figure out what end altitude you need for a certain grade and visa versa.I have not had this confirmed to me but deduce it from my common sense (I'm a mechanical engineer (P.E. also)). Hope you can make use of this. May the the Lord Jesus bless you and yours
