Aug-21-01, 07:53 PM (EST) "telepoles given me a hard time" hi guys
my new route taking good shape ; fine progress ;BUT;
telepoles are upsetting my puter
plant any along the track (possibly anywhere come to that)
and once the train has passed the poles behind and presumably being derendered from the world CRASH! well actually FREEZE
the frame is frozen and a double ctrl-alt delete routine is the only way out ' thought it might have been the spacing but increase it to 30 mtrs ( more realistic anyway ) but stillno-go any clues any one ;
by the way ;'search' brought up nothing constructive

Aug-21-01, 09:34 PM (EST) 1. "RE: telepoles given me a hard time" I'm not certain that the telephone poles are the issue yet.Have you tried something similar using either lights or fence shapes? As far as the video system goes, a pair of fences running parallel to the rails is the same thing as a set of telephone poles or street lamps.Here's what I mean. Both images below are treated identically by the video system. If one crashes the system, so will the other.This one's a simple yard entrance with wooden fences lining the entire yard:
This one's a road in the yard area that has telephone poles and streetlamps running full length:
Telephone poles use two shapes: The pole and the shadow.
In the route editor you reference the S/SD in your local route shapes folder. When using the runtime interface, you reference the S/SD file pairs in the Global\Shapes folder. In all cases, the system reads the local route copy of telepole.dat for the spacing and alignment.Other than that there's nothing special about the object.Jim Steven, MCSE

Aug-22-01, 00:25 AM (EST) 2. "RE: telepoles given me a hard time" I actually had a wierd problem with telephone poles in one route, not crashing, but unable to delete. After looking at a long stretch of track between two stations, I decided to put in another station midway, deleted the telephone poles that stuck up thru the platform, and ran the sim. Huh? telepoles up thru the platform! Go into the editor, delete them again, run the sim, back again. After a couple tries I figured maybe there WAS something different about the object, like it took a start and end point and filled in between, so I deleted ALL the poles, and they came back every time. I eventually scrapped the route anyway due to another problem, (expletive deleted) return loops, and haven't tried telepoles again yet. When I do (on a disposable test route) I'll let you know if it happens again. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-22-01, 09:54 PM (EST) 3. "RE: telepoles given me a hard time" I`m still playing with the thing here ; about to set up a simple
test route and try different setups ; gonna beat this one ;
just need to get these poles sorted ; they make an impressive
sight running along them at speed ; and the route needs them for authenticity ; can they be made from trio sets to more or less
groupings ; maybe singular planting may work ; what intrigues me
is the freeze happens after passing the graphic far behind and I
assume the sim unloads it from memory ; would have expected it to
kick up a fuss on first rendering ; seems odd to me ;
oh well

Aug-23-01, 00:17 AM (EST) 4. "RE: telepoles given me a hard time" I'm with you, they give a good measure of speed, and enhance the feeling. I was out at the Illinos Railway Museum last Saturday, took a ride on the North Shore Limited, and was surprised to see that the only instrument in the Motorman's cab was a pressure guage for the brakes. If Don Shepley's reading this he could probably tell you what kind of markers they had set up on the original route, but on the museum track they use the telephone poles.
