Hey all,
I'm building my infamous, not very well known, not existing, fictional Fabelar route, and now I want to build a bridge which supports a turn.I want to build it in Gmax, but the problem is: HOW!How can I get the curve right, like done with the quebec berms?
Is there any formule for it, or is it more guessing and testing? (I hope not!).Any help would be really appriciated!
Maybe the creator of the quebec berms can tell? Many thanks,Regards,RenéP.s.: I asked this in the trainsimulator forum, but a moderator told me to ask here, so....-----------------------------

RenéFirst note which track sections are going to make up the bridge. Then make up a track template of the track sections, if needed. This can be deleted before the shape is finished.

This shows a 150r10d left curve/25m strt/150r10d right curve. Now you can build your bridge around the "template" and see how it looks. The secret of the berms is that they use the same Position/Qdirection lines (world files) as the track section they are placed under. The same can be done for your bridge if you select the correct origin when exporting the finished product. This is also very simple answer for your question, everyone will have their own way of doing things.

RE: How to create bridges with the right curves?

Thanks for your help...But how do get a proper curve in Gmax, which has the same angel?
That's the problem actually... Or do I have to make a full cirkel in Gmax, pick a piece out, and use it? (and reset the pivot point...)Regards,René

Use the TUBE with the SLICE box (parameters on the right side). You can create any curve that's needed. How to create bridges with the right curves? – image 4

RE: How to create bridges with the right curves?

Easy Solution. Um...1) Look up the LENGTH of the sections you're trying to capture. Also note the angle of elevation, if any. Also note the number of 'segments' you see when selecting that piece of track (wireframe mode). If you can just find out the length, you can skip step 3).
Look in Micheal Vone's guide, or Okrasa Ghia's instructions for Xtracks (I think).2) Create templates of straight shapes for those lengths. Create boxes or planes with the *corresponding number of length segments*. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! Make it 5 meters wide per track section. You should always allow a touch more per track for double/triple tracks. You will thank me for telling you that one day 3) Use the formulae... x= Angle in degreesAngle in radians = 2*pi*(x/360) Arc Length = angle in radians * radius Your track section is that length. Use meters!4) Make sure your pivot point is CENTERED to the template object. Apply a "bend" modifier to your template, using the angle in degrees of your track piece; you have to fotz around with the x,y,z settings to get it to bend the way you want it to.5) Move the pivot point to the end of the track, i.e. like its a big track piece, so it will appear in the proper place and orientation in the RE. Collapse it to a mesh; if there is more than one template, Use the 'align' tool and attach them. If its on a grade, be sure and re-align the pivot point to the world.6) Voila! You're ready to make the next killer gmax object. You can keep the template and use it or clone it for your actual roadbed piece.Personally, I think Gmax outdoes everything out there (even TSM) it's just a lot more complex of a tool... but, that's what makes it superior. The texturing options are the best and it has all the parametric modifers you could use, and it's FREE which amazes me. As a lark, I made a two track bridge where one track stayed level and the other climbed a trestle, ending 13 meters above the other track. Too steep of a grade to really use, but when I placed the track it fit nearly perfectly, MUCH more so than I expected.
Good luckBruce

Thanks all for your help, I just tried some out, and it's going to be perfect! There's a curved brigde (maybe more... depends on how much I need) coming up!Regards,René-----------------------------

RE: How to create bridges with the right curves?

I finished the first one (well, the main part... only textures and some kind of fence... maybe pillers...)Here's a screenshot from the supporting bridge for A2t500r20d.sRegards,René-----------------------------

RE: How to create bridges with the right curves?

Wonderful!!!! Did you use the "bend" modifier? If not then now'd you do it? Nice job...Bruce
