Version 1.8 of Gulf Mobile and Ohio Northern Lines has been released. It should appear in the file library today or tomorrow. Please read the following caveats VERY carefully! * This version supercedes all previous versions and is NOT compatible with any previous version. All previous activities have been updated and are included with the route. It is recommended with the strongest emphasis that you make a back-up copy of your existing GM&O installation before installing the new version as it WILL over-write your existing installation. * Prior to installing, read the README.TXT and INSTALL.TXT files which are found in the master zip file. * This route requires XTracks, NewRoads, Global Tsection 0024 or later, and Kosmos 1.1. It won't work without these items!!! * Activities included require considerable non-default equipment. Freeware GM&O equipment is once again available. Please contact me by private mail for instructions on how to retrieve the needed equipment. * Distribution uses spanned zip files. See this thread for instruction on how to work with this process: http://www.train-sim.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=22758&forum=DCForumID3&omm=0

* There are 13 parts at 35 MB each. Unzipped final size is >4.0 GB! Dial-up users will not be able to download this route due to its size. The route is available on CD for those who do not wish to patiently wait through the long download process. CD's may be ordered for a $10 charge which covers shipping and expenses of producing the CD. Payment by PayPal or money order only. CD's are shipped when payments clear. PayPal pay-to address is jdbandman@hotmail.com. Bug-mail and other requests should also be sent to this address!!!WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 1.8: * Considerable changes to track/signals in St. Louis area. Merchants Terminal line (west bank of river) now has 1950's/1960's era trackage. St. Louis Union Station passenger tracks are all complete (all 42 of them!). Service trackage and other yard trackage is still in the works. St. Louis trackage has been extended west to Grand Avenue (junction of Wabash, Frisco, and MP). * Scenic detailing work between Chicago and Dwight plus trackage updates and additions of industrial trackage/facilities. * First implementation of Chuck Rickert's tile-stuffing program in high-density tiles (Springfield and Chicago areas). Should produce no significant problems and improve frame rates by approximately 30-50% in these areas. Feedback definitely requested! * Addresses all bugs reported through Dec. 1, 2004. * High-viz signal textures (Maple Leaf Tracks) implemented.Final request: Please do NOT email me with "how do I install this?" questions. The information you need is included with the route. The route uses the same installation process as all other multi-part install routes. Errors with running the route will be caused by not adhering to the prerequisites list (see above). Any loading errors will be corrected by going back and checking this carefully.WHAT'S COMING IN VERSION 2.0 * Scale Rail, full route (if possible)!
* Additional scenery
* No changes to the current track profile
* KANSAS CITY! (importing from ATSF Marceline Route)
* Anticipated release of V2.0 is JUNE, 2005.ENJOY! I've had a blast (and a lot of frustration!) getting this product ready for release. Merry Christmas!JBD

RE: GM&O Ver. 1.8 now available.

One step (adding this because I made a minor goof!) to add to the installation process....I had renamed a world file to allow me to get into SLUST and stuff the tile. You will need to rename one world file or everything will "disappear" along the riverfront! In the WORLD directory, find the file w-011625+014246.wb. Rename this file to w-011625+014246.w (just take the "b" off the suffix) and all shall be magically healed... I realized this oversight this morning whilst lying in bed contemplating my navel and decision to get up or just lie around watching cartoons.... (it was difficult but, as you should assume, I DID make the decision to get up!)JBD

Nope, Beeny.... This is a "stand alone" version but it WILL overwrite a previous installation unless you rename the old version's directory!JBD

Speaking of consists, I downloaded and installed this route and now there seem to be approximately 38 missing consists. Is there another file besides the 13 files used to install the route itself? Thanks for any help.CB

RE: GM&O Ver. 1.8 now available.

Those cons are from the St. Louis Tour Activity. Search for that activity name in the library.Just remember to NOT install the activity as the paths, traffic, and services are no longer valid! All of those were updated and included in the 1.8 distro...JBD

RE: GM&O Ver. 1.8 now available.

Scale Rail conversion is now underway on the GM&O!!! I have started converting the entire route over to SR with a little "special help" who has asked to remain nameless. So far, on my part, I'm working my way east from Kansas City and am as far east as Selsa (between Independence and Blue Springs). The conversion is much easier than I had thought it would be but all the search and replace work in text editor is very slow... I'm checking each segment as I go and found a wrong section of track that I edited in today but it should be an easy fix!If all goes well, I will release a set of ScaleRail world files and the accompanying track databases around Christmas time. As this was the primary upgrade planned after 1.8 was release the ScaleRail conversion will officially become Version 2.0 and will then include the Kansas City trackage which is already a part of the ATSF Marceline Sub. route...JBD

Enzsd60m.con is for the Enzyte SD-60M I did. It's not used in any activity. You shouldn't need it, at least nothing I'm aware of...Gmodbug.con is just the little doodlebug, nothing else. You can create your own consist for this is AE...Als1513.con shouldn't be called in any activity. It's a single SW-1500 unit, however, again easily created in AE...Remember that the OLD activities will NOT work with the current release.JBD

Hands up, if this route really WORKS... I have never got any previous versions to run, avoiding this one until I hear that someone has actually been able to install and run it WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS, missing textures, ACE files, mysterious derailments, etc that have plauged every other release.

RE: GM&O Ver. 1.8 now available.

I have it up and running for the most part. There are still a few missing shape and texture files even after running the route through RR6. And I didn't even try to locate all of the items that the consists call for. I just used the MSTS Activity-Analysis program to substitute. The activities with lots of consists just bring up the send/don't send message. I know that a lot of work went into creating the route, but since it takes up 2.5 gigabytes of my harddrive (and I can't get RR to compact it) I'm sure that I will probably delete it after I explore it. But it is interesting and it does "run".CB

I had similar problems to yours. What I finally did was load up all the previous builds, then overwrote with v1.75 to get it to run. Runs fine. I have yet to try 1.8.The error I kept getting was something to the affect of could not close or find the explore activity. Obviously another left out file. Also, I redownloaded several times and got the same thing doing 1.75 as a stand alone. If I do get 1.8 on, it will also be done as an overlay.

Click to send message via ICQ

Ninety percent of the time, this 'could not close or find the explore activity' happens if an activities or services folder is completely missing. Don't know if it is the case here, but might be worth looking at. RobertR .. ADF-M&RM at http://www.adfrr.com

Thanks Robert. I found out per JD's response below that the folder was indeed missing and what the fix was for it. I guess I'll go ahead and install the update.By the way, if you remember, I was having problems installing your route last year with Windows XP. I'm happy to say the problem was solved and the latest version of the ADFRR is finally running on my MSTS. Thanks for the help and the great job on the route.

I too have got it to work. I had some shape files that failed to copy, but I have this problem with all routes that have a install bat. I just look for this missing files from the other routes and copy and paste. Takes and extra 10min, but I'm up and running now.

RE: GM&O Ver. 1.8 now available.

Well, folks, I'm sorry to say that something happened to the world file just south of Union Station Chicago and a LOT of statics are gone. I suspect this happened in an out-of-memory sitch that started happening when I attempted to use Global Tsection 0027... Fortunately I've got a good back up from previous work.... With the Scale Rails upgrade now imminent (and I DO mean IMMINENT!), I'll fix that file....Will be posting some screenies in the screenshot forum later this evening! Check 'em out...JBD

RE: GM&O Ver. 1.8 now available.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-08-04 AT 06:41 PM (EST)

This is really a fine job!! Installed just fine. Sim is not complaining about missing shapes, etc. However, just southwest of Chicago, where the GM&O crosses another rail line and north to the lift bridge,(two track), the signals that were on the line and at the crossing are now missing. Have not been in this area in so time. Also between Dwight and Bloomongton(?) my frame rate is down to 2-3 fps and I have encountered folage smears and floating upside down folage. This also seems to happpen when viewing in one direction only. Not sure of the cause. My machine , the Sim, or the route.
This may be a 'memory' problem locally. Cleaning up unneed processes and programs may help. I hope so as adding 'Scalerail' will add a few Meg to the global folder. Still need to be sure that I can run tsection.dat #27 without problems. Still a great route. The are dark signals in the Chicago area (prior to the 21st street tower) and the new signals in St. Louis. I assume this can be fixed in v2.0. Thanks again for a great job!P.S. P4 1.8G, 512M ram, ATI 9600XT 128 Meg.

RE: GM&O Ver. 1.8 now available.

James, are you referring to Bridgeport where ATSF, IC, and GM&O come together for the bascule bridge? I have the floating foliage issue at the Pequot line junction north of Dwight but no other places. It seems to be system/video oriented as I don't get it on my desktop computer. Also that particular tile is a "stuffed" tile because of the extra scenery. The tall grass seems to be the culprit. I really like this object but it may simply be too video intensive to keep.An update on ScaleRail..... I have just received the updated world files with ScaleRail now in place. I am test-running the route with this for the next few days and will likely issue a "ScaleRail upgrade" package in a week to ten days after I fix an over-sized switch lantern to look right on the SR switchstands! The S.R. project is already 90% complete thanks to the unsolicited and extremely WONDERFUL, COURTEOUS, KIND, HELPFUL, THRIFTY, BRAVE, CLEAN, AND REVERANT help of a certain individual who has asked to remain anonymous so as not to be inundated with similar projects. Without this sainted person's help this project would not be completed until well after the new year! Look for it as soon as it passes beta testing!!!FYI: The global tsection issue HAS begun to create problems with my route-building work and I recently started having phone home crashes on loading up the route in RE until I parred down the REF file. I still have very little memory left to work, however, but I save every 3 minutes now as a rule of thumb so I don't lose an hour's work!Version 1.75 DID have the issue of getting out of here without an ACTIVITIES folder (previously documented in the forums). This issue is addressed by installing the GM&O Activity Pack or by simply creating your own ACTIVITIES directory. So far, I have not been overwhelmed with problems of installation with this build (thankfully!). If you DO experience problems, please feel free to email directly (see the README file for an EXTRA SPECIAL BONUS while you're pulling out my email address!!!). I would also ask that people with install/operational problems NOT use the "private mail" feature on the forums as I quite often miss seeing the alerts...JBDP.S. Folks, even if I DO say so myself, you're gonna LOVE the ScaleRail version of the route! Marc Nelson and the Scale Rails team have really raised the bar!!!! I'm dying to get a first glimpse of the CUS and Dearborn approaches in Chicago later tonight after church!!!

RE: GM&O Ver. 1.8 now available.

yes, the smears did appear to be tall grass. Perhaps there is an alternative grass or 'cat tails'. However, the memory issue is not so simple for me. As I use 'RDRam" the cost to upgrade to 1G is considerable. Will have to wait a bit until I can get an AMD64. As most people are probably running MS XP, the temp solution may be to reduce background processes. Anti virus if running a firewall, etc. Also, can you use tsection.dat #26 with Scalerail as this may be more stable ?

RE: GM&O Ver. 1.8 now available.

Yep, that memory is still pretty pricey! I tried build 0026 and it wouldn't fly on my laptop. This is the reason that some of the more populous tiles around Chicago and St. Louis lost signals and other statics. Would get a "failed to load shape" error then made the mistake of shutting down and saving! There are now some tiles that I can not enter with RE until I go back and restore dropped signals. Of course, with the Scale Rail project moving along it may be to my benefit to actually start a manually track database rebuiled like I did with ATSF Marceline way back when....The out of memory problem has exacerbated itself with the installation of Scale Rails into the setup. Simply means that my days of route-building with the laptop while I'm in a lecture class (grad schoo), on my planning periods at my job, or lounging at home are basically over and it's time to go back to the desktop machine which has a lot more video power and memory... Either that or fork over a couple of $G's to Dell for a new laptop! LOLJBD
