Route_Riter v6.1.57 Question – image 1

I did a backup of my freshly installed basic 7 routes along with a couple of routes that I am working on and installed the latest version of RouteRiter as seen in the subject..If you run it on the basic 7 routes you find that you get a very long list of things that aren't right with them that it fixes..Does that mean that it is working or does that mean that it is good that I made a backup of them???Thanks in advance,Warren M.

Hi Warren, It's a good thing you made a back up. If you read the readme that came with RouteRiter, you will see that it warns not to run the program on the default routes. My Computer specs are in my profile

Hmmmm!Missed that when reading the different things -- so how does one know it is doing right by other routes if it doesn't work proper on the original 7???Warren M.

Warren, When you install the sim from the original disc's, it is assumed that the the 6 original routes plus the tutorial route are complete.RouteRiter de-compress & compress shape files could cause damage to the original files. When you install 3rd. party routes & run the bat. file it extracts copays of the files from the 6 default routes. So these are needed intact & unchanged. My Computer specs are in my profile

RE: Route_Riter v6.1.57 Question

Route Riter does work on the original routes, that is the problem. The original routes have files in them that are not used. In compacting the original routes Route Riter removes the unused files that are there. If you do this and then run the installme.bat from a route you are installing some files you need may not be there because they will have been removed by Route Riter when you compacted the original routes.Regards,Eric

When I ran it on the original routes I just had it CHECK them not compact them and they all had errors when it did a CHECK of them..Being as 6 is a major revision and though it says something about not using it on the original routes -- I was just seeing if they ran clean -- one would hope there is a bench mark of a program to know whether or not it is something that isn't going to eat up ??? months of work on your own route!!Warren M.

Hi Warren,As stated in the Route Riter instructions always make a complete backup before using it, that way you can recover your files in case something goes wrong.Regards,Eric

Route_Riter v6.1.57 Question – image 8

MrMike had all ready pointed that out but also pointed out that it has a note ine RouteRiter about not using it on the original 6 plus tutorial so not being a programmer but having worked in industry on CNC machinery we made the programmers run the machines in maintenance mode to prove out there programs before we woold allow the operators to run the programs on parts -- we were having to many maintenance calls before we implemented that in the early 70's -- in the late 90's while I was dabbling in Linux someone said something about not needing virus protectors and snoop detectors in Linux -- how do you know unless you have a program that looks for them -- they now have them -- you have to have a bench mark to run a program against to know if it is doing what you want it to do -- and this new innovative Version 6 which added more Microsoft BLOAT to my system requiring .NET FRAMEWORK 1.1 be loaded to run it don't apparently have anything to let one know that it is doing what it is suppose to except to run it on your own route ..How do I know that it is doing me for the better???Best RegardsWarren M.

If you have just used Route-Riter to check the original routes, then the only changes it will have made (the only things it ever changes in checks) is that it corrects the case of the shape entry in the .sd file to ensure it is the same as the case of the .s file name. Or it copies some missing textures from other installed routes. This will make no difference to the running of MSTS, it will not have removed any files. There were a number of errors in the Default routes, filename case did not matter when MSTS was released, but Windows XP SP2 appears to handle case differently - For instance if you have a consist named SCOTSMAN.con and your .srv file has a Train_Config entry of scotsman when you run the Activity under SP2 you will find the locomotive name listed in the simulator as UNKNOWN RR v6 attempts to correct all these case errors.Mike

>That is what I was initially trying to find out -- so then it is OKAY to use on the originals in such a fashion?? I haven't tried to COMPACT anything I am a long way from completing any of the routes I am working on -- but I would like to stay with the latest technology in software -- I am running WIN XP PRO wifth FULL SERVICE PAK 2 installed and it even did the service pak 2 update for .Net Framework when I installed it -- Should I then do that with all of my original routes and tutorial of checking them with the new Route_Riter v 5.1.57 so they are all working on the same page with upper and lower case names??Please advise,Warren M.

RE: Route_Riter v6.1.57 Question

Yes, in particular you should also use the options Fix .con files and Fix .srv files on the Activities/Stock tab as these Case problems in the .con and .srv files appear to cause the most problems.Mike
