Hello calr and all others....I have finally returned, only to find my username deactivated and now I can't be a cool 'charter member'. Nels says he can't fix this. I feel like I was cast out LOL.I'm back to working on my route again, and have been using gmax (the breakfast of champions) to make some awesome objcts - yes I finally figured out texturing and face mapping!!! I have a simple rr bridge I might put up in the library, any interest? It's on a .6 degree incline but if someone here llikes it I'll be happy to modify it for them.It seems not much has happened in the years I've been away except for all you folks getting better at MSTS route design. I re-read some of my old posts and boy, have we come far. Payware routes... an interest of mine. What are the rules again about what you can't do in a payware route? I know you can't use any defualt objects, does XTracks (if licensed properly) count as a non-default track package for copyright purposes? I have some cool stuff planned. I actually had biult an inclined trestle seperating 3 tracks into one lower and two upper decks only to find that trains can't climb a 1.8 degree grade easily - OOPS. No problem to modify it, though, and it was surprisingly easy to place it accurately.Does anyone need an object to put in thier route? I want to stay sharp in gmax and I'm working on my route right now just carving terrain and tracking. Let me know.One thing that amazes me is that here in 2004, there's still no easy way to use dem data to both accuratley terraform and place markers. I dl'd tstools and some other stuff and the markers are still off by several meters no matter which technique I use to make them. I know the distortion introduced by TS's tiling system is hard to get around, but the instructions for TStools are evven harder to get around. LOLAnyway, happy holidays to all and let me know if you need somethin'....
Bruce

charlie

RE: I'm back again

This IS my original username. See? They canned me...Do a search in the library and you'll see a not-so-professional airport control tower object by me; also do a search of postings including the archive on my name. Hey Cal? Do YOU remember me? Remember when we figured out the "V" key? LOLOL Boy, those WEREN'T the days.I'm "back" from not doing anything with MSTS in the hopes (please don't laugh) that it would be updated, improved or (now you can laugh) appear in a new version. *siiiigh*Not happening, so I'm back to working on my route with all ojects created by yours truly. I've already got a small two-track indoor station and that bridge, but had to trash all and start again on the route itself. Not bad because I didn't have much there, and the much older version (from 2001, which had tons of default objects) was so corrupt it locked my computer LOLOLOL.
For all newbies who happen to read this, you can't imagine what it was like before DEMEX, TSTools, Michael Vone and other Gurus who picked through this RE thing and made sense of most of it. It only took me about ten minutes to terraform the whole route with TSTools. Amazing!But as you akll know the RE tiles out in 2048x2048 squares and the earth just ain't built (or mapped) like that. What I've been doing is eyeballing the DEMS and sat photos and using the markers as a very rough guide. Demex doesn't do too much better than other programs. Oh well...Back to the track gang.Bruce

RE: I'm back again

Hi Bruce:Welcome back to V scale railroadin' via MSTS!As for a commercial route:You basically start with what you get when a route is generated:* terrain.ace
* microtex.ace
* tree1
* A handful of Japenese signals.
* the data files needed for track objects.
* etc.In otherwords, the bare essentials. No buildings, no forests, no nuttin'. From there, you build your own world.The XTracks EULA (End Users License Agreement) has restrictions against use in a commercial endeavor. You will need to either stick with the default track system or contact Marc Nelson at 3DTrains to enquire about licensing his commercial version ScaleRail pack for a commercial application.Good luck!

>Hmmm. I was under the impression that "no nuthin'" meant NOTHING at all... even the tree and the terrain textures. You can't re-distribute the signals or anything, or so I thought...anyone?

>Ummmm, that's what I said in my post. I have no intention of using anything to re-sell without proper licensing. You tryin' to get me in trouble here boy? LOLOLOLOLOLBut seriously, Andre, does x-tracks use any non-redistributable MS stuff? In other words, if I licensed xtracks and used it in a payware route, would that be in line with MSTS's EULA?

Thanks a lot. Oh, it's great to be back by the way. Is this how it is now?
