First, I'm new to this beast called the RE. Got the Tutorial from Abacus(?) and I'm trying to build a route in which a 2 lane road dips down and under the track rather than an overpass. My problem is trying to get the terrain to shape correctly, or at all. I've had trouble with shaping terrain from day one and if it isn't the most frustrating thing to come out of Redmond,.....anywayI've tried the "trenching" method in which I lay 10m road section and angle it down then press Y to have the terrain move to the level of the piece of road. This works fine for the first section of 10m road. When I attached another piece of road and angle it down also and press Y, the terrain doesn't do anything. Is it me or what? Thanks for any help. I've found many answers to my questions on here and am quite thankful for all the helpful suggestions that have been posted.Mike
Mike:It ain't easy, so don't be hard on yourself. You may need to adjust each point in the terrain using the number pad while holding down the "end" key, before you make it work. There is no way other than trial and error. If the terrain doesn't adjust when you add the second road section, you might have the width too narrow. Play with the settings in the "Terrain" window and add 1 meter to the road width - see if that helps. You can also increase the angle of the cut. Another thing you might try is to add a third section of road, press "Y" and then delete that section. You can also adjust the error bias of the tile. If you've got Michael Vone's guide, it can explain better than I can!Hope this helps.Mark A Southern Railway Fan
There must be something wrong with my route somewhere. If I raise or lower the road section and press Y, the terrain only follows the first piece of road. I've even set the error bias to 0 for that tile, no difference.I'm wondering if it has to do with the fact that I didn't do any DEMing of the route and everything so far is at the 0 elevation. If I add water, the track runs right through it. I've gone into other routes and played around and this "trenching" method works just fine so it has to be something specific to my route. Any ideas?Mike
You may be trying to dig below the minimum level set for the tile. You can set the tile max and min so that you can dig lower or build higher. You don't need to DEM the route, although it makes a world of difference if you're building to a prototype. I think that you can right-click on the tile (in the terrain texture tool - the one where you see the black sub-tile grid overlaid on the terrain) and set the max/min values for the tile. I know you can reset those values - I just don't recall the exact steps.Andy
I found that min/max level for the tile and it is set at -63/63 and I'm working somewhere around zero, or so I think. I can dig a hole use F9 tool, turn on the water and it's right there and the water level is set to 0, so that leads me to believe I'm trying to trench around 0 and I should be able to dig down from there.I went into another route and dug a perfect trench so I'm pretty sure I know how to do what I want to do, just stumped as to why this route/tile won't let me dig.Mike
Just grasping at straws here, but have you tried the same process in a different tile, in the same route? Might be something wrong with that tile. Any chance you could post the Lat/Lon Co-Ords of that tile? I could whip it up in RGE and test it. Another thing. You could go back into RGE and re-generate those tiles. Just load that route in RGE and select that particular tile, and a few around it (or-all of them), and re-generate them. As a last resort, if you haven't progressed to far with the route, just delete it and create it again in RGE. Just for the heck of it, I created a small test route and used the default 10M 2Lane road piece and was not successful at reproducing your situation. I've never run into that situation in my experience with RE. Sorry if that's not much help.
Yup, most the tiles in the route seem to suffer the same problem. Lay a piece of track or road, angle it up or down and press Y and nothing happens. The terrain doesn't move at all.I've gen'd a brand new route in the RGE, Dem'd it w/Demex and it works just dandy. Actually, even the F9 tool seems to work better. I'm thinking I mite just trash the route and start over. I've got the marker file and know which pieces of track to put where and since there is very little scenery other than roads I can problem start over quicker than tinkering with the problme.FWIW, the lat/long of the problem tile is 27.8062/82.6718 Another tile on which everything seems to work fine is 27.95316/82.44311Thanks so much for all the help I'm getting on this!Mike
