OK, SO Im going to toss this out to the masses and see what you think,I sit down, create a route just to create a ref file with every possible shape that I have, all the default route shapes and all those I have downloaded.
Ok, So I use Route Riter to get rid of the dupes and do some general house cleaning to the Class headings of every item in the ref list. making it a little more easy to find certain shapes faster...and I used ref clean to do its thing. I used my own little standard of class naming such as
Buildings - Factorys
Buildings - Manufacturing
Vehicles - Cars
Vehicles - Trucks
Vegetation - Trees
Vegetation - Weeds
and so on...
So I do all the trackwork and priliminary stuff, this whole time I can go in the RE and look at my ref file list just as I saw it when I was editting it... everything is broken out into nice little sub class's and somewhere near 2500 items are showing up.So I go to one end of my route and I start putting in trees, and farms and roads and so on.... still everything shows up in the list of shapes I can use.. Im saving along the way, Im backing up every night. Now last night, Im working on a farm, I go to find some new tress to work with and all of a sudden, when I go to the selector, all of the class heading work I did is gone, theres only like the headings
Buildings
Vegetation
Track Object
Hazards
and just about 10 more headings... there were about 50 sub classes the way I had cleaned it up.
So I go to Vegetation, open it up, theres 2 trees??? there were like 40 before. I check the other class's and its the same, theres only a fraction of what was there..
I closed out, opened the ref file in the editor, and it looks exactly like it should, everything that was there, some 2500 shapes.
I go back in to the RE and now, theres even less class headings..This one has me stumped... I have had plenty of time where the ref file would be corupt for some reason or another and it crashed the re, but this thing load up, only it shows just a fraction of what the ref files shows is there in the editor..The pics below are the before and the nowGot any ideas?Robert C. RE: Lost in Ref file heaven??

Hi Robert,When you say you back up every night, did you use Route-Riter to do the backup? If so, then the .ref file will have been backed up each night and you can try substituting the one in the route now with a backup. If that does not help, make a copy of the .ref file, make sure it is in Unicode, and see if you can open it in Route-riter .ref file editor. If you can, try reindexing it and saving it again and see if that helps.Mike

I actually just burn the whole directory to cd,
And see, thats the wierd part of it all... it opens in everything I have opened it with, wordpad, textpad and it opens just fine in routeriter as well... but when the oject list shows up in the RE... its not right...
Im totally stumped as to why it looks right in every source and if it wasnt in the correct unicode, it wouldnt load in the RE but would crash it correct?Robert C. Mapplebeck

RE: Lost in Ref file heaven??

When you copy files to a cd, they automatically get changed to a "Read Only" attribute.
Try right clicking on the file and go to "Properties" and remove the check mark from the "Read Only" attribute.

RE: Lost in Ref file heaven??

If you have an extra bracket somewhere in the .ref file, it will open fine in the various text editors, and probably in Route-Riter, but MSTS will only show you those items down as far as the error. It might be worth your while reading the article on using the Context editor to match brackets on Yuri's site at
http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/tutorials/context.htmlI have found this very useful in fixing faults in .ref files.

RE: Lost in Ref file heaven??

Sounds like a missing(or extra)somewhere after the last listing that shows up.Otherwise, I assume that you know that you must enclose in quotes any entry of a name with spaces as part of that name such as "Buildings - Factories" since only Buildings will show up as the entry if you don't use the quotes.SRV Ron
