No, that's not a misspelling. I just did a search in the File Library for a dam, and except for a couple of route descriptions that mention the word, I came up empty. I'm sure someone must have designed at least a small dam for MSTS, but if so it's either not uploaded or they decided not to use the 'dam' word in their file description. I would like to put a damn dam into my latest route project, but I suppose I could make do with just shaping the terrain to make a 100-foot dike of terrain instead. I know Cal has some dams on the Columbia Gorge route, but from the screenshots I recall seeing sometime ago, they're probably not high enough for my situation. And hooray for my 1000th post (about 750 in the first year of MSTS, and a few scattered ones since then).

I could use some Dam bait! There's some in random routes (like you said) that have little dams in them. Kingsport sub and Blueridge sub come to mind. Also couldn't you use somthing like this below as a decoy for one and just kind of line them up (donno if this is possible, I'm lost in the RE)? Its a road/sidewalk section.

RE: Dam! My 1000th post!

I've tried building the stone walls that surround wharfs and quays here in New England (and other parts of the world) by stacking up the stone walls used in the Innsbruck-StAnton route. It's tricky and time-consuming, but it can be done. You could make a rough likeness of a straight, stoneworks dam that way, similar to the ones at Kensico Reservoir in New York and Boonton Reservoir in New Jersey (yeah...in real life I'm a water resources engineer these days), but it would be a struggle and it would still lack details such as spillway and roadway and such. On the other hand, a straight, masonry dam should be straightforward--no pun intended--in TSM, because it's a simple shape and nothing moves. (Note this comes from a guy who is still struggling to produce his first ANYTHING from TSM.) A curved, concrete dam would be another story entirely. I suspect you would need to have a way of making TS think your dam is land, or it would just submerge when you raised the water level to fill the reservoir. (Hmmm...is that true? What happens if you raise the water level in a selected region that doesn't have a real physical boundary? How does TS handle that? Does water flow into adjacent areas or do you end up with a "water cliff"? Never thought to try that.) Obviously from OTTODAD's post, one way to establish a real physical boundary for the water is to build a "land" dike that fits inside the stone structure, so you don't see it under your new scenery object. BTW, IIRC, the payware Scenic Railroad has a dam in it that might give you some ideas. Charlie B

RE: Dam! My 1000th post!

>I suspect you would need to have a way of making TS think
>your dam is land, or it would just submerge when you raised
>the water level to fill the reservoir. The dam I want to build is close enough to a tile boundary that the tile water height will not be a problem. At this point I have only Dem'ed the route and put in a few markers. When I got to the lake, I set the water height, and that's when I begin figuring how to handle the lake at the tile boundary. Comparing with Terraserver photos shows I got lucky enough on the boundary location that water height on the low side of the dam will not be a problem. I think Ottodad's concept from the Alpensee route below is probably what I will end up doing, making a tall terrain dike. It won't be visible from the train anyway. And damn! (spelling intended.) Once I post this I will no longer show the 1000 post count Oh well.

Take a look at Port Ogden & Northern (any of the later versions). There is a small dam in that route that might work. The dam on Columbia Gorge is much too large for your use.Cal Rasmussen
