I have a strange problem with some tertex .aces I've just created -- there is a distinct line of color visible along the edge that I cannot seem to track down. Now I know about the lines that are created when you don't wrap around properly, this isn't one of those. Here's the situation: I used two distinctly different colors in their own layers and cut away part of the top to expose the lower color. I've checked carefully and the top layer properly covers the lower layer out to the edges. But in both RE and the SIM, when viewed from a distance, the lower layer color becomes visible along the edges when only the top color should be visible. As you move closer the lower color along the edge begins to disappear and when you get fairly close it goes away entirely.I figure I've done womething wrong but i don't know what it might have been. Sequence wasa) create image, save copy as xyz.tga. b) convert xyz.tga to xyz.ace c) remip xyz.ace (using remippit) d) compress xyz.ace (using route ritter). e) move xyz.ace into route tertex directory. This is the first time I've used both remippit and route ritter on the same .ace files.Any ideas what/where I've screwed up?Dave NelsonWP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 100% complete; SP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 20% complete; Aug 1950 <<new .sig under construction>>
>>Any ideas what/where I've screwed up?Nothing actually.Problem is when MSTS goes to the lower level mip mapping as the camera moves further away from the tile, it samples the image from both sides of the edge - wrapping the opposite side around.Best approach is to create your image with a 'bleed' area around the outside border which continues the texture, but won't be visible when applied. MSTS would then use this 'edge' or frame when it starts blending the mip level. You would then apply the texture with a scale and offset so the edge isn't visible. If we ever see an update to Mosaic it will include a feature to automatically create such 'bleed' areas.JohnCS
I think I understand (no need to reply unless I got this dead wrong): If I keep the tertex as it is but change the scale so it's a bit larger than normal the strange edge I see goes away, right? I'll play around with that in Mosaic and see what happens. Thanks John.Dave NelsonWP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 100% complete; SP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 20% complete; Aug 1950 <<new .sig under construction>>
See www.christrains.com/faq.htmlLook for the section titled "My textures are going white in the distance!" - it's in the lower quarter of the page.I believe a similar thing is happening here and the fix Chris describes will work for you.
Excellent explaination. Thanks very much for the tip!I'm using Mosaic to stretch the textures a bit so there's that extra color left outside of the boundry. Not quite to the solution (I'm using 97% right now, down from 99.6%) but almost there.Dave NelsonWP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 100% complete; SP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 20% complete; Aug 1950 <<new .sig under construction>>
