HiCould anyone tell me the best way to build that specific length of curved dynamic track? I set it to 72 angle over 480m radius and yet I get like a few metres of track. What am I doing wrong here?thanks again

Yuo are doing nothing wrong, it's just that the angle is not in degrees as you appear to think but in something called radians.
Full circle = 360 degrees = 6.28 radians (2 * PI)The value you entered thus was 0.0072 radians = 1.296 degrees
which makes for a 480m radius curve 3.456m long.

Another way to think of it is that the length of 1 radian is equal to the radius. When you entered a radian value of 0.0072 you specified a length of 0.0072 * radius.Because segmented curves are in degrees and dynamic curves are in radians there is, essentially, no way for you to get the length of a dynamic curve to match a standard curve.Dave NelsonWP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 100% complete;

RE: Dynamic track

No way at all?The curve I want is over 480 metres and 36 or 3.6 chains in radius. So is there any way to produce these 2 curves with standard or dynamic track?

When I wrote "no way" I meant you cannot get DT to match the length of any pre-fabricated track shape, such as an ordinary a1t500r10d. IOW the two types of curved track are not (normally)interchangable, even with the same radius.Also, remember that with DT, when you start entering the radian values (not the radius value but the radian value, the one that controls the length of the track), you're dealing with very small real numbers that are used to multiply against the radius in order to caclulate the track length. Want it longer? Just keep cranking up those fractional radian values.Whether it can make the curve you want is another thing. If you can't get the DT dimensions right because the RE "dialers" offer too gross a granularity in value you might be able to refine the dimensions enough by manually editing the values in the world file. IIRC the values you want to understand and edit are in the second and fourth lines of the 5 line block of data -- those define the curves and the other three lines define the tangents.Dave NelsonWP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 100% complete;

RE: Dynamic track

There is now quite a selection of Curves in Xtracks and in the opinion of most Route Builders Dyn-Tracks are best avoided whenever possible ! ScaleRail forinstance offers none ! O t t o

RE: Dynamic track

Oh, radians. That explains how my route ended up too far east. When I first started building the RF&P, I was laying out curves with dynamic track. I quickly found out that creating double-track curves out of dynamic track was next to impossible, so I ripped it all out and relaid ordinary double track along the same alignment. By and by I found out that it wasn't pointing the right direction exactly. It didn't matter a lot since I was building on the green billiard table anyway, and I compensated on a few curves to get headed in the right compass direction again. (This was two years ago.)By the way, as I mentioned in another post a few weeks ago, the track is all complete and the track database safely rebuilt. I am putting in the scenery and have about five miles to go. Then signals, mileposts, crossings and other opportunities to mess things up. But if I succeed, I hope the route will be done this winter.

RE: Dynamic track

There's such a tool in this zip file:http://www.train-sim.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=view_attachment&file=415d4c1e64b9bbee.zipIn "curvature.htm", if you input 36 chains your answer will be based on Australian chains 66 feet in length (724.2 meters radius & 2.41 degrees per chain).If you want your answer based the US chain of 100 feet length, do this calculation first:36 chains * (100/66) = 54.545 chainsInput that to get a curve 1097.28 meters radius with 1.59 degrees per chain.regards,
charlie
