Aug-20-01, 11:37 PM (EST) "MSTS UTM Boundary Tile Splicer utility" LAST EDITED ON Aug-20-01 AT 11:45 PM (EST)LAST EDITED ON Aug-20-01 AT 11:40 PM (EST)This one is a must for anyone who has a route that crosses a UTM boundary.!!! Read all of the following instructions before attempting to run this program !!!http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3b81d10a6d005a0b.zip0. Create your primary route using the Route Geometry Editor. Select all tiles that apply, on both sides of the UTM boundary. Mark one of the UTM boundary tiles as your start tile (this is temporary and you can change it back later). (I prefer to use the northernmost tile)Hint: UTM boundaries have a longitude that is an even multiple of six. For example, -84.0 is a UTM boundary.1. Create an secondary route using the Route Geometry Editor. Select the tiles that span any UTM boundary. Mark the same tile that you marked for your primary route as your start tile. (I prefer to use the northernmost tile)2. Record the tile names of each of your secondary tiles. You will need them later. Also record the longitude and latitude of this tile, so that you can jump to it if you forgot to change your start tile.3. Use John Stanford's DEM Extractor program to generate terrain on the left (west) side of the boundary in your primary route.4. Use John Stanford's DEM Extractor program to generate terrain on the left (west) side of the boundary in your secondary route.5. Use John Stanford's DEM Extractor program to generate terrain on the right (east) side of the boundary in your primary route.6. Edit your primary route and go to the first UTM boundary tile. If you remembered to change your start tile, you'll already be there. (I prefer north to south, but the order doesn't matter if you get all of them)7. For each UTM boundary tile in the primary file, record the ceiling and floor values.Hint: Each UTM boundary file will show a flat-bottomed trench between the UTM boundary and the west wall.8. Edit your secondary route and go to the first UTM boundary tile. If you remembered to change your start tile, you'll already be there.9. For each UTM boundary tile in the secondary file, record the ceiling and floor values.10. For the recorded floor and ceiling values for each UTM boundary tile, mark the lower floor value and the higher ceiling value. You may want to line out the other values.Example: If the primary tile has a floor of 110 and ceiling of 325, and the secondary tile has a floor of 108 and ceiling of 322, then you will want to use 108 and 325.11. In the secondary route, manually change the floor and ceiling values for each UTM boundary tile to the values you've marked in step 10.Note: You may get a message alerting you that "clipping" will occur. This isn't a problem; just click "OK" and continue.12. In the primary route, manually change the floor and ceiling values for each UTM boundary tile to the values marked in step 10.Note: You may get a message alerting you that "clipping" will occur. This isn't a problem; just click "OK" and continue.13. Close the editor window.14. Execute the UTMMerge program contained in the link above.15. Select your primary route in the left pane of the utility window.16. Select your secondary route in the right pane of the utility window.17. The program will analyze both routes and place any tiles present in both files into the drop-down box.18. One at a time, select each file and press the Execute button. The program will splice the selected tiles together and store the results in your primary route. The Execute button will become enabled again after each tile is complete.Note: Running tiles through twice by accident will not damage anything. Just go on to the next tile.19. Execute the MSTS DEM Seam Eliminator utility contained in the link below to close up any remaining gaps in your route's terrain.20. After the Seam Eliminator is done, if you still see pits and pocks in the terrain at your UTM boundary, you can re-run the Seam Eliminator again and again until the seam disappears.21. As with John Stanford's DEM Extractor, you will need to adjust each UTM boundary tile ceiling value upward by one meter to reset the shading.22. You're done! Delete that fictional bridge that you put in place to go across the gap, and run a train or two for charity!Other Utilities:MSTS DEM Seam Eliminator: http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3b8019bf606626a1.zip MSTS MicroDEM XYZ Merge Utility (this version works now...): http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3b8197e3289c350b.zip

Aug-20-01, 11:51 PM (EST) 1. "The results..." This is the UTM trench in north central Georgia as generated by John Stanford's DEM Exporter utility, looking south from the Georgia Railroad...
This is the same view, after the UTM Boundary Splice utility has done its work...
This is the finished product, after using the DEM Seam Eliminator to smooth out the pocks and pits...

Aug-21-01, 09:43 PM (EST) 2. "RE: MSTS UTM Boundary Tile Splicer utility" Some additional notes on using the splicer:If you export a DEM that contains information on tiles that are completely on the opposite side of the UTM boundary from the zone in which the XYZ file was created, then you'll get a completely blank tile or two. You have two options here:1. Add those tiles to your secondary route and splice them as well--the program will completely replace the blank tile with info from the good tile.2. Reverse the order of DEM extraction. Now that these utilities are working, I'm making the final preparations to my terrain. It looks so good... Thank you, John Stanford. Aug-22-01, 09:06 AM (EST) 3. "RE: MSTS UTM Boundary Tile Splicer utility" LAST EDITED ON Aug-22-01 AT 09:11 AM (EST)Wes;Tried to download this and got an error that it can't be found. Also, I get an error on the convert3. I tried the fix with the list file but still didn't get it to work. What have I done wrong. Also, is your xyzmerge in the uploads section? I can't find it.Thanks for your utilities.David Klemm

Aug-22-01, 06:49 PM (EST) 4. "RE: MSTS UTM Boundary Tile Splicer utility" I just tried the download link in the first message and it seemed to work. I'll re-post all three files in a new message thread to see if I can clear up the problem. It is very important that you not have MSTS Editor up when you're trying to download. The download requires an additional thread and sometimes MSTS Editor has so many of the system resources under its control that you can't start the thread.I've re-posted the setup program for Convert3, and Rick (at Flightsim.com) says that he remembers updating it. Just in case, here's the correct Setup.lst file:http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3b8436f2222e467e.zip Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-03-01, 04:15 PM (EST) 7. "RE: MSTS UTM Boundary Tile Splicer utility" I'm sorry folks - think I've missed something here but no matter whether I search the message threads or the file download areas, all I can find is the ZIP file mentioned in the first message which is 0 bytes in size.Is there an alternative source for the UTM Merge utility? I've got a WP Reno Branch sat here desperately waiting to have it's UTM Boundary trench filled in... (and I thought I went for an easy start!) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
