I know the size of this route has been the topic of some discussion. It got even larger after installation topping 2 GB. If you have the latest Route-Riter, check the route first and correct the few missing textures, then compact it. It ended up being a little over 320 MB in final size and ran with no problems. I hope Joe reloads the file after using Route-riter. It is nice to have access to the NEC from the other end. I hope the folks working on the extension from Philadelphia to NY are sucessful as well.

You mean somebody has been able to actually compact this route successfully? If so, how long did it take? I tried to do it myself, using the v6.something Route-Riter, and it seems to hang about halfway thru the compacting process (and I've tried about 10 times). Even left it over night once, when I got to bed arount midnite it had already been going on for about two hours, and when I woke up around seven hours later, it was still chugging away, with a popup warning me that the computer was almost out of memory (I have 512 mb).

What Ole said!
And in my case it wasn't for lack of Computer Horsepower as this was a Athlon64 with 1 gig of memory.... I gave up after 2 hours.....Chuck Schneider

RE: MBTA

Checking the route first took about 40 minutes, compacting about the same also. Running a Dell Dimension 4500 with a 2 ghz P4 and 512. Saved almost 2 GB of disk space when completed. I made sure nothing else was running at the time. Route runs fine in the compacted mode.

RE: MBTA

The latest patch to RR v6 on my site at http://members.optusnet.com.au/virtualtrains/beta6.html should be able to compact this route with no problems.Unfortunately, I have neither the time, nor the inclination, to download this route. I emailed the author direct asking if he required help and suggesting he send me the route on a CD, but I got no response.I am at a loss as to why some users would have problems compacting the route, as I have a couple of routes here under development (and thus include all the shapes/textures I have on my PC, and are around 2 gigs in size), yet they compact OK. Certainly the final versions of RR v5 should handle these OK.Mike

RE: MBTA

I don't know mike but 100% CPU on an Athlon 64/3400 for 2 hours convinced me that something is not right in Denmark with this route.... I've been trying to compress it for several days so I can fit it on a CD and send it to Sniper....
Joe desperately needs help packaging this thing.....
And I wish I had better luck with it....BTW, as it stands now it takes about 2 1/2 CDs to fit all the archives on.... and the installation is beyond merely ugly...
Joe did good work but obviously packaging is not among his talents.... Like Route Building is not among mine! Chuck Schneider

RE: MBTA

Hi Chuck,This was why I really did need a full copy of the route before compacting to see if it was the route, or if it was a problem in Route-Riter whereby it was failing to compact the route.Henry has managed to complete compacting it, so it is therefore possible, maybe I will just have to bite the bullet and download the whole thing.Mike

RE: MBTA

Hi Joe (and all),I managed to download the route, and tried running Route-Riter to compact it. I came across a couple of problems which I am working on.1. I downloaded all 16 zip files and unzipped them into Routes\MBTA
2. This worked fine apart from the fact that there were 11 Texture folders, however I moved all the .ace files into MBTA\Textures and this was fine.
3. I then ran RR and it went into a loop, this turned out to be because there was no Terrtex\Snow folder - Within Terrtex there were a bunch of Texture folders, some of these were apparently sub-sets of the Seasonal texture folders, however the one named Terrtex\Snow(2) turned out to be the correct Snow folder, so I renamed this to Terrtex\Snow and the route then ran OK apart from missing consists etc (all the activities have either missing consists or missing rolling-stock).
4. I ran the check route, and after fixing a few missing textures all was well there.
5. I then attempted to run the Compact Route option, and after an hour it was still running. I thought it had locked up, but it turns out that the latest versions of RR do extra checking of the .ref file, and the MBTA.ref file is almost 8.5 megs and contains almost quarter of a million lines of text. RR has to parse all these lines, hence the time it is taking. I will try to speed this up and let you know how I get on.

RE: MBTA

Further to the above. I found that it was going to take several hours for RR to process the MBTA.ref file, so I removed the .ref file from the route and had RR Compact the route. This has the effect of automatically producing a .ref file which will work in the Route Editor, however most shapes will be listed as Misc and bear the names of the .s file - The route then compacted OK. I also went through and deleted a lot of spurious folders in the route, such as Terrtex\Autumn etc. Furthermore there were hundreds of .s/.sd files in the Textures folder all of which had to be deleted manually, Texture folders should only have .ace files in them. Finally I converted all the .ace files to DXT1 textures. Results were,MBTA as downloaded 2.12 Gigabytes - 31254 filesAfter compacting 358 mb - 3841 files
After converting textures to DXT1 - 278 mb - 3841 filesFinal zip size to produce a workable route 121 mb (this is before using RR to run the Write.bat option)

RE: MBTA

Mike,I notice that all of the Xtracks and Newroads shape files and *.sd's are in the routes SHAPES folder. I think the Write.bat option should clean them all out, since the shapes are probably not used as dummy objects in the ref file. They're in "MBTA-2.zip" and could be simply deleted by hand if they aren't in the ref...Typical shape files (and corresponding sd's) to be found:A1t*.s, A2t*.s, A3t*.s, A4t*.s, D1t*.s, I1t*.s, N1t*.s, N2t*.s, S1t*.s, S2t*.s, ukn1*.s, ukn2*.s, br2*.s, cr2*.s, fwy*.s, gr2*.s, hwy*.sThere are a number of Kuju shapes, could be dummies:Road2L*.s, Road4L*.s, US1Rd*.sregards,
charlie

RE: MBTA

Hi Charlie,Yes, RR 6 is still a beta, and all the Compact Route code was rewritten, some of it still does not catch all the items which should not be there. Actually this route has been a great exercise for me to get RR fixed up, but my eyes are dropping out at the moment Think I will go for a walk...Mike

I'm glad to see that there is enough interest in this route for all the trouble everyone is going through to correct the problems.
I am at the moment downloading version 6.0 of RR and I'm going to try it out. I also downloaded the patch and we'll see what comes of it.I sure appreciate all the replies.

RE: MBTA

How did I miss this? Chuck was trying to compact it down to CDs to send to me (my DSL is getting 20-30k instead of the usual 70-80k) so I could repackage it.Mike;/////////
MBTA as downloaded 2.12 Gigabytes - 31254 filesAfter compacting 358 mb - 3841 files
After converting textures to DXT1 - 278 mb - 3841 filesFinal zip size to produce a workable route 121 mb (this is before using RR to run the Write.bat option)/////////If I could make a suggestion here, Joe, since Mike already has all the extras out, possibly Mike could upload what he has, and you send an email to Nels (link at bottom of page) asking him to remove what's in the file library and replace it with Mike's repackaged version. That would solve all the problems quickly and painlessly.

RE: MBTA

Hi Jim,Maybe if I could get an address, it would be better if I could send it to you or Joe on a CD, as there were some missing bits in the Activities etc, and do not want to post a route which contains the same errors as earlier. Also the size I quoted (actually under 60 megs now) does not include the rolling-stock which Joe originally posted.Mike

RE: MBTA

Mike and actually the rolling stock tends to overlay stuff with the old versions Joe has....
Much better if it were a list or a separate upload....
Based on experience I would recommend that the rolling stock be installed in a dummy folder and then only cut and paste what is missing....Chuck Schneider

RE: MBTA

I downloadwd and installed MBTS 'successfully' but found some problems with the snow(2), etc. files. Is there any likelihood that a compact correct version of MBTA will be placed on the train-sim website soon or should I try to figure out what to do with the (2) files myself. From what I have seen the route looks great, but a couple of minor problems need to be fixed.Bob

RE: MBTA

Hi Bob,Just rename the Snow(2) to Snow and it works fine. All the other folders under Terrtex can be deleted.I have compacted the route down to about 60 megs total and sent a copy to Sniper, I think he is going to fix it up a bit and see if he can get permission to upload the compact version.Mike

RE: MBTA and A2t3000r10d.*

I was able to run RR (6.0.5) on the MBTA and it compacted it down quite a lot. I used the original 2.2G data base without the "upd" and "up3" updates. When I run the route after this, there is a missing .s and .sd file pair for A2t3000r10d.I can't find this track section in any other route. For a quick workaround, I copied, edited and renamed A2t2000r10d and I can now run the route from end to end. The track as displayed looks funny where this section is located but the sim runs the train through there just fine.Has anyone seen this and is there a better solution?
