Aug-20-01, 07:29 PM (EST) "Combined Ojects" I'm trying to run Jim Steven's v3 script with no resultThis is what I've done:
1)All directories are whatever install designated in that process on the C: drive.
2) I created ..../utils/CombObjs and expanded the zip there.
3) Went to Start/Run %ComSpec% to get the DOS shell and the great thing of this is that I was in the directory where combine.bat was so the path was showing on the screen.
4)Invoked combine "C:\Program Files\Micorsoft Games\Train Simulator"
The screen says:
The string of "File creation error" messages. The screen scrolled several times, so it there were any other error messages, I missed them....Read Me.Txt created....
Starting WordPad to display the completed log file.script endsNo Merge directoryNo log fileWordPad starts with the warning box saying no such file. What have I missed here?Help from anyone is appreciated. Thank youHank

Aug-20-01, 09:11 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Combined Ojects" Start MSDOS prompt, it's in start/programs/accessories. Then do the cd to the combobj and run the combine. Make sure you type the paths correctly. I goofed mine more than once. Also, I found that I had to purge the merge folder from the previous version run to get this to work. But it does great and except for a few missing ace files, gave me everything. You'll get the error on the ace files either at the start of the route load if the item is placed on the route. Or when you try to add a new object you will get the missing ace file error. Leave the error up, go to explorer, find the file in another routes directory and copy it to the textures folder in your route. Then say ok to the error and it will now be available.Hope this helps. Let me know if I can help you anymore.David Klemm

Aug-20-01, 09:18 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Combined Ojects" David Klemm--message for you at the bottom.Let me share what I did.(I have no idea if what I did will help you. I also have no further information than what you are reading at this very moment. Any questions to me will probably go unanswered as I have no more information.)After several attempts, and reading the batch file, I observed that the script creates up to three files in your windows\temp directory: combobjs.log, readme.txt, and possibly combobjs.err. After several attempts at running the script, two of the three files were there. I deleted them.I also found that instead of a "merge" directory being created, it created a "merge" file in the TrainSim directory. Therefore, any attempt to run the script again, would fail since "merge" existed.Lastly, I did try with long pathnames. No go. So I used short ones. For me, that meant I typed at the MS-DOS prompt:combine d:\progra~1\micros~1\trains~1After doing the above, it worked slicker than slick.David Klemm: If that list of about 30 textures is handy, why not post it in Jim's original Third Attempt message?Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-21-01, 01:08 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Combined Ojects" Lawrence; When I get home I will put the list on here. Except for a couple that I had already used in my route which caused the error immediately upon the route loading, the rest I found by going to add more objects button and opening each group and paging down. And that was just a minor nusience because I'll I needed to do was switch over to explorer and copy them over then answer yes to error. I will say that sometimes I also got a fail to load s file error but that seems to be a bug. The thing I really like besides having access to all these objects is the way Jim subdivided buildings, vegatation and vehicles. The other thing to do that would be a help is the track though I'm not sure which way I want to see it. i.e. all curves together, then straight ,then turnouts or all curves of the same radiuses then all straights not dependant on number of tracks and so on.David Klemm

Aug-21-01, 10:01 PM (EST) 12. "To all route designers" Here is the list of ace files that were not in the merge folder. I used the latest version of Jim's program.terrain.ace, acleantrak1.ace, acleantrack2.ace us2restaurant.ace, road2lanet_dt.ace, jp2concwarehouse.ace, talltreeblock.ace, us1deer.ace, jp2bridge1.ace, bridge1_usa.ace, warehouse.ace, jp2wornsingle.ace, us2woodbuild.ace, us2grainelevator.ace, platform.ace, us2whitefishst1.ace, workman.ace, bluediamond.ace, rewhitearrow.ace, reddiamond.ace, flags.ace, yardmarker.ace us2tracktown.ace, jp1signals.ace, atracktunwall.ace, atracktunfloor.ace, us2tallbush1.ace, us2logger.ace.The fix was to copy these into the textures folder from another route.

Aug-20-01, 09:51 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Combined Ojects" LAST EDITED ON Aug-20-01 AT 09:53 PM (EST)I would try the "short file name only" option. I think what's happening is this:MS-DOS has a limited command line length. Some of my command lines are pretty long too. When the command interpreter parses the command line and replaces my variables with your actual values, the MS-DOS environment rejects the processing but does not display errors. So a command line that I wrote looking like this:if exist %2\Routes\USA1\Shapes\%%s if not exist %2\Merge\Shapes\%%s Starts as this for a file named "tunnel1_noturrets.s" copy %2\Routes\USA1\Shapes\%%s %2\Merge\Shapes >>%OUTLOG%And eventually swells to this:if exist C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\Routes\USA1\Shapes\tunnel1_noturrets.s if not exixt C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\Merge\Shapes\tunnel1_noturrets.s copy C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\Routes\USA1\Shapes\tunnel1_noturrets C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\Merge >> C:\Windows\Temp\outlog.txtThat line is 368 characters long and exceeds the 66 character limit and causes the failure.Using short file names is one thing that will help.I'll see if there are ways I can shorten up the commands.Files in the "TEMP" folder are overwritten each time you run the script. I used "%TEMP% for them because MS Windows requires a TEMP folder to start up, and the "%TEMP%" variable is always valid. It's the only directory I can count on.

Aug-20-01, 10:06 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Combined Ojects" Thanks for the explanation, Jim. As I said in my previous post, I was just citing what I did and then it worked. Of course, the fact that much of what I did may have been coincidence is proven by your closing statements.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-21-01, 12:31 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Combined Ojects" You are the only one in this thread who has said anything about a "double slip." Here is what has been said in other threads:http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/1251.html"I tried making this as inclusive as possible, but haven't included the TSECTION.DAT items yet."Notice that Jim states that he didn't include the TSECTION.DAT.In the following thread:http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/1253.html"Look at the left side of the following screen. That's a double slip track piece that ships with your game but is not in TSECTION.DAT by default."This is the only location where "double slip" is mentioned. Notice what Jim says about it.When you combine the two, you come up with IT AIN'T THERE!Paying attention to what you read would not waste people's time.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-21-01, 00:04 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Combined Ojects" LAST EDITED ON Aug-21-01 AT 00:05 AM (EST)I finally got the bat file to work. Here is what I had to do.From the start menu, select program files, then right click on ms-dos prompt then select properties.I changed the total conventional memory to 640 and the initial evnironment to 2048. This seemed to have fixed the problem. I am now able to run the bat file with no problems.Hope this helps.Oh, and my train sim directory is in d:\games\mstrainsim
so I used the following command to start the mergecombine d:\games\mstrai~1Alex Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-22-01, 11:27 PM (EST) 15. "RE: Combined Ojects" I agree with every thing you say. I does appear that I typed too much, according to the log. It appears that I typed "combine" twice, but I did not. There also appears to be a (-r) switch there that I did not put in. It also appears that I do not have a valid MSTS installed at the end of the path, which I do not. The valid MSTS install is in about in the middle of the path. I tried this path command at: Start\Run\%comspec%\, I tried at the Start\Programs\MS DOS Prompt\, I tried rebooting to DOS and CD'd to the combobjs directory, then keying in the whole 52 character path, and every attempt produced the same results I posted earlier. I probably should look up my version of W98SE, but I've patched it several times, so don't know what's a valid version number anymore. My best shot is to sit still for a while and see what develops. On the other hand, don't really need new objects just yet as the Marias Pass route just went south today. Don't know why. Had attempted to level some terrain and got an "invalid platforms" error message when trying to run a MSTS supplied activity. That's why you make backups, right? Aug-23-01, 07:50 PM (EST) 16. "RE: Combined Ojects" LAST EDITED ON Aug-23-01 AT 07:58 PM (EST)Here's what I got from my log file:Output Log opened. Script progress messages will appear here
Command line was (combine) (combine) (c:\progra~1\micros~5\trains~1) (-r)
Looking for Train Simulator in c:\progra~1\micros~5\trains~1
Found Train Simulator in c:\progra~1\micros~5\trains~1
Found c:\progra~1\micros~5\trains~1\Routes folder
(rest deleted for brevity..)The only difference I see from yours is the ...\micros~5\... part, I assume you have around 7 Microsoft games loaded...You confuse me with the comment "keyed in the 52 char. path",
I opened a DOS window, CD'd to the COMBOBJS dir and typed:
combine c:\progra~1\micros~5\trains~1
That's only 37 char including the COMBINE and the space... I hear you about backups!! As buggy as the editor tools are, I'm about to just sit back and wait until someone develops some REAL editors for this game.Mike
