Good morning,I uploaded my Clinton Sub yesterday. It's coming online now.I tried something a little different with this project and built three sets of activities. One for default equipment, one using some NALW stuff, and one using vNERR equipment ( I live over there). After each activity was created (not very high quality I'm afraid since I'm not very good with the AE) I packaged it and put it into it's own folder in the ACTIVITIES folder. I'm hoping that will make things a little easier for folks who don't have some of the stock I prefer to use.Unfortunately, I found out that the default activities contain a couple of non-default items (an NERR modified verion of a default piece of rolling stock created by vNERR). I'll need to track those down and update them. Alternatively Route Riter and Conbuilder do a fine job of fixing that sort of thing. Having trouble keeping things sorted out (over 800 pieces of rolling stock) in my old age I guess.I need do some map making since a couple of areas are extremely complex. Thanks to everyone who creates custom objects for those of us who dabble in this sort of thing, and to the fine folks who did the beta testing for me.Hope you like it. Comments and suggestions and complaints are welcome.CraigClinton Sub v1.0 - 100% complete

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.The route does erquire x-tracks v3.10 or later and newroads v3.0 or later. Should have put that in the FILEID.DIZ. Not sure why I missed something so important so I'll blame it on senility or old-timers disease.Craig

The "upcs.z01" file is downloading as a zip file. The ".zip" needs to be removed for the span zip program to work. Otherwise, this looks like one on the best freeware packages I've seen.

RE: Clinton Sub v1.0

The file UPCS.z01.zip is indeed downloading as UPCS.z01.zipI'm not sure why that's happening since it wasn't uploaded that way. As Duncan said, if you rename the file to UPCS.z01, you shouldn't have any problems extracting the route. If problems persist, you probably had a corrupted download.I also had an e-mail asking about an error message that can occur when the activities are unpacked. The error message states something to the effect "this activity is based on TDB version 498 and the routes TDB in version 501". This is caused by my having made a couple of last second scenery changes and not repackaging the activities. Any change made and saved in the RE results in a version number change. If the version numbers are close, as these are, it is usually safe to extract the .apk's. If there's a big difference in version numbers, the worst that can happen is that you'll get some broken paths and non-functional activities (it won't hose the route).Hope that helps clarify things.Craig

LAST EDITED ON Sep-05-04 AT 09:14 AM (EDT)

Craig is the placement of the signals prtotypical of this route? I saw some sidings that had signals protecting them on the exit but not the entrance. Also noticed that the two headed absolute signals were a good distance from the switch they are designed to protect.Having worked for the railroad as a conductor I thought the signal placements and the lack of some signals where I would think they needed to be place would cause trouble for activity designer who would like to have as much opposing traffic as possible or creating switching activities. But then again we have some activity wizards in here that could probably work magic on the route and get this working just fine. One other question why not use the new signals that was included by Jean instead of the default signals from MSTS.I have signalled routes that I have using them and they look so much better. As a matter of fact you can use both in the route because they use the same script. That way you can still use the grantry mounted signals.I've used this combination and haven't had any problems.Overall I think you did an excellent job on the route. This was a year and a half that was well spent.I'll be waiting for the add-ons.Good job.Claude Debnam NS Piedmont Division Raleigh EastPrevious Topic | Next Topic – image 1

RE: Clinton Sub v1.0

LAST EDITED ON Sep-05-04 AT 11:19 AM (EDT)

Claude,To respond to your questions, the signal placement is not prototypical but was placed in an attempt to make activity building easier. A few people who are very talented at building activities suggested moving the signals away from their switches in order to make reverse point placement easier. The unsignaled areas were left that way because that is prototypical for those particular areas. I had signals in a lot more places around Cedar Rapids and they were actually causing AI traffic to stop miles from where the player train was located. Pulling those signals seemed to improve the function of the route and, it would appear, MSTS will control movement in an effort to avoid collisions without the presence of signals. Allowing this to happen seemed to work better that having the signals in place.Ultimately, my goal was to approximate prototypical and, at the same time, enhance activity building. Hopefully my logic with signal placement was not too flawed. As for using the default signals instead of Jean's, I had originally used his signals but had problems getting things to work right. I replaced his signals with the default stuff (and made some other changes at the same time) and everything started to fall into place. Now, I'm thinking that things started to work because of the other changes I made and not because of the signal change. I should think it would be easy to replace the default signals with Jean's by using Route-Riter . I may give that a shot tomorrow (I've got about 100 backups of the route so if I hose one, all will not be lost). I must agree that Jean's signals are far better looking that the default signals. All of that said, I have to admit to a lack of signal function and logic. I'm wide open to suggestions.Craig

Craig thanks for clearing the air on that one.I may eventually get around to replacing the signals for my enjoyment.Since things seem to work the way that you have the signals set up I will probably leave them in the same place while replacing the default with Jeans'signals.Claude Debnam NS Piedmont Division Raleigh EastPrevious Topic | Next Topic – image 2

RE: Clinton Sub v1.0

Kelley,Glad you enjoyed the activity. I felt it was time for a little something to let folks know that the IC Route was still being run. And with the exception of the occasional AI train, the IT portion of the route has been pretty much ignored. If David & Co. ever show up again, I really need to try to talk them into adding some sidings to the IT portion. As for activities for this route, I'm not sure at this time. I'm hoping that someone more knowledgable about the CNW than myself will step up and do some. That way I can just concentrate on playing rather than developing/testing. Besides, I have more half-done MSTS projects on my hard drive than I really want to think about at this point in time. Take care,Henry

RE: Clinton Sub v1.0

I'm following this with interest. I have tried to get the route up and running but have hit a snag. I did change the name of the UPCS file as suggested. The zip file starts to extract files but hangs up after a short time with the following error message " size of extended file does not match uncompressed size. Clinton to Belle Plaine". This is repeated a number of times. Seems to relate to the activities. I tried re-downloading the zip file, but have the same problem. Suggestions? Thanks, James

RE: Clinton Sub v1.0

Kelley,I'm way up north of the Clinton Sub, not really even familiar with the area so gleaned my information from USAPhotomaps and track charts.I originally was going to do the Boone sub since I've driven along that route many times. Got the bright idea to combine the Boone and Clinton Subs into one big route. Then I started to learn the RE and started laying track at Clinton. Once I realized the big investment in time required to do even a short route, I figured I'd die of old age before it got done so I pared my ambitions back to what I have now. Eventually, I want to extend to Boone.I'm not on MSN so can't help you there. The full version is building on my work machine now and I'll upload it as soon as it's tested. (It'll include the fix for the signals which I'm uploading now. Hopefully it'll make the library tomorrow. Thanks for your interest!Craig

RE: Clinton Sub v1.0

Craig, OK< I have a few suggestions, since this was/is my stomping ground. PLEASE take this as just helpful hints, NOT critisism. First, can you extend the East-West main further east so you can start activities on the proper trackage. GO out as far as the BN/CNW crossover bridge and give us room for long trains to get a run at the bridge...which BTW< you captured PERFECTLY! (The secondary is just an old holding yard/interchange with the MILW)Second, make SURE you have the route set up left hand running! It is still PURE CNW that way. Uncle Pete hasn't screwed that much up yet. THird, just after you come off the Mississippi bridge, your missing the MILW which comes in from the right. This is an important thing, as the interlocking there is for the MILW to continue south after the industries in Clinton. IT crosses over the CNW, not on a diamond, but a normal crossover, and it has its own signals on the signal bridge just after the River bridge. FOurth, Clinton Corn processing (ADM) is the biggest industry in Clinton. THis should be modeled with grain elevators and such. That is just down from the car shops./right next to it. Fifth, at the throat of the yard where the bridge crossed in Clinton proper, you need the yard office (DOn't forget the dual-sided CLINTON signs on the light pole)......can't change crews there witout it OK< before you or anyone else think I am bashing the work, I AM NOT in any way. I just know the area. Craig, I am also able to go get you digital pics of the area if you like. It is too bad we didn't have the Elevator from Planters Peanuts......Mr. Peanut is a landmark in Clinton on that building! One other thing, just after you round the curve comeing into Clinton proper, don't forget to add the passenger station on the west side of the tracks! IT is just south of the SOO/CNW crossovers. BN also came/comes into Clinton from the south and does a little clanging and banging. I am MORE than willing to help if you need it. Have Camera will travel for you. From what I have seen you haqve done a WONDERFUL job on the route so far. The above are just observations from a die-hard CNW nut. I have many pics from out there, but no scanner to get them in for you. One request.....if you make it to Boone, PLEASE go out past the KAte Shelley bridge! THat is as much CNW as Sherman hill is to the UP. COntact me off-list at niceoneace@aol.com if I can help in any way. I would love to get out to Iowa and help you as much as possible!BTW< contact Hank Sundmyer on the signals. Better yet, contact me if you wish!THANK YOU for bringing the most important rail line out of Chicago to life dude!!THanks to Macster for getting me on the right track to open it! Im off to run the Kate Shelley out to Belle Plaine!

RE: Clinton Sub v1.0

Mac, et all, AMTK don't run over her per say.......BUT, every time the Q gets in a jam, the ole'CNW comes to the rescue...the Cal Zephyr has detoured over her at least a dozen times since the 80's. In fact, in the early 80's AMTK was going to re-route the train to the CNW. THe communities that would have lost the service threw too much of a fit, so it stayed....(Insert: Picture me in a rocker lighting up a pipe to tell ya all about this yarn here)Now, just FYI....for all you "it don't ever happen"...in 93 we had the great midwest flooding.....ALL west rail lines BUT the CNW were underwater, washed out, or unuseable. So, here comes the CNW to the rescue!! For a week or two, the Cal Zephyr ran across her to Omaha. At first, it was welcome back to the 50's and the CITY train days......because ahead of the F40PH's was a PURE CNW E8. (Albiet in Metra colors) They used the three remaining E's to lead due to the CNW's cab signal requirements.ALas, it did not last. THe E's were tired and did not preform well. But for those of us who got pics of the Cal Zephyr coming under the twin signal bridges at the diamond in Rochelle.....it was a return to REAL PURE CNW passenger power!!THey eventually used a few F40PH's with ICG cab signals (pretty much the same system) and it was back to the regular train. SO the answer is no........and yes......sort of. You can do activities using AMTK power as a detour. ALso remember, you can use the Challenger, UP E-9's, DDA40X and the whole business fleet put out by various people for excursions. I have ridden behind both the Challenger and the E's over the Geneva sub, but I know for a fact they also run over the entire route. Boone has a tourist line, and has festivals with the UP power being the stars. Yes, thats righ...MR "I HATE THE UP" has spent his hard earned money riding on Uncle Pete's passenger fleet...........But it was on PURE CNW track!!! Nuff' said!

Hi Robert,The error usually has to do with a problem with the env files. A search of the forums will come up with dozens of references to the problem. Also you can running RouteRiter on the route to see if it can fix the problem.Regards,Eric

RE: Clinton Sub v1.0

This error normally means that something is amiss in the environment folder. I don't have this route, but frequently this is caused if there is an "installme.bat" in the route folder, and you haven't run it yet.If it's there, you would normally be expected to have all six default routes installed. Take a look, and if it's there, run it...regards,
