I have another problem with X-tracks. Or not exactly problem, but small problem.I have discovered that X-tracks adds extremely many new track-shapes to the Track Sections menu. Is there a way I can remove the shapes I don't use?

RE: X-tracks question

There is a function in Route-Riter that does just that.Mark

RE: X-tracks question

Yes, but it alters the tsection.dat doesn't it?
I'm just wondering if he plans to upload the
route, or if it might cause problems with other
routes this person has installed. Trying to
anticipate future questions. I'm not around
much anymore, but like to help out if I can.

RE: X-tracks question

Thanx for the tip, Markhyams.Lenglel, I think I am going to upload the route, but I can't upload X-tracks together with the route because of copyright-stuff. So people who wants my route will have to install X-tracks themselfes. When route riter edits the tsection.dat in my global-folder, it doesn't matter because when X-tracks is downloaded and installed on another computer, it will make a new tsection.dat file for the global folder on the other computer. But if Route_Riter changes the tsection.dat file of my route, I'm not quiet sure what will happen, but I think nothing special will happen.Anyways, all this is very unsure, so I'm going to run several tests on my own computer to check if anything happens...

It won't affect anything as far as sharing the route goes. What Route Riter does, it just removes the un-used entries from the tsection.dat file (the GLOBAL one), so you have a shorter list of tracks to work with. When someone installs xtracks fresh, they will have ALL of the tsection entries, so your route will work fine. It won't change anything in how the track database or .w files are created, it just limits the number of track pieces available to you while you are creating the route.Mark

RE: X-tracks question

Hi Homer,as Mark said, no problems to minimize the file by getting rid of unused shapes. There are even many "reserved numbers" in that file for tracks that were once proposed or are in the making. They might come one day or might never make it on any users computer... No need either to distribute xtracks with your route. Except for a few permanent sceptics, most users have xtracks installed already as most routes nowadays require it, and within a short time, I'd also expect anyone except (the same?) some sceptics to have scale rail installed - which could soon become the new standard anyway, in my humble opinion. The tsection.dat in your route's folder on the other hand has nothing to do with default tracks or xtracks or any other add-on road/track package. The tsection.dat in your route contains nothing else than the information MSTS needs on the sections of dynamic track you used in your route. Don't ever try to mix entries from these two kinds of tsection.dat files - it'll create a horrible mess (Otto can tell a story, I think), as the references (numbering system of the various track sections) is not compatible and overlaps...Lukas a.k.a Swissie

Hi Swissie !> some sceptics to have scale rail installed - which could soon
> become the new standard anyway, in my humble opinion.I don't know where your preferences lie in MSTS, mine are Tracks, Switches and Rolling Stock, but having tried Scalerails in one of my test routes, I can see the great improvement in the appearance of it's rails, but Switches and their range need to be worked on before Scalerails can replace what we have at the moment, including Y-Tracks and UK-Finescale.MERLIN as you know is working on his version of the BERNINA, planning to create tracks which to me look like the real thing, unless rails in the USA are really that flat at their top as displayed by Scalerails ? I can rely on getting unbiased comments on that from you, hopefully not getting the usual comments whenever anybody suggests improvements on anything ! Thanks, O t t o.

RE: X-tracks question

First off Otto, I believe you need to have a better understanding of what makes for a "better" model. Many things need to be taken in consideration, not the least of which is usability and frame rates. If you like, I can build track to suit your needs, but I can guarantee the resulting model would bring your PC to its knees. Fine and dandy to have perfect rail and absolutely round wheels – just don’t expect anything less than a slide show.In their current state, and given the limitations of MSTS and user’s PCs, ScaleRail and UK Fine Scale are the only tracks that have a realistic profile and ties AFAIK. Tim Booth has a big head start on getting an alternative to the masses, and having the benefit of this time, has manage to make improvements over the original models he released long ago. I admire his work, as well as contributions from Roman, Mark, and others. However, each developer, including myself, has his or her own strong points and weaknesses - just keep in mind that MSTS is the wrong platform for making “prefect” rail. A closer proximity will surely come, but not with the sim we have now.No doubt my turnout models can use some work, I’m aware of this, but I don’t need you to hammer that home each time the subject of track comes up. When you have learned how to model (and have produced over a thousand pieces of track), then perhaps you’ll have a better appreciation of what goes into these projects. As it stands, you’re screaming from the cheap seats.
Cheers!

RE: X-tracks question

Point taken, Marc !I tend to forget the limitations of MSTS ! I am happy to know that you agree that some of my comments are valid and shall hold my breath until I see the finished product, which I hope is not going to be too long now, it might kill me otherwise !
