I was under the impression that MSTS had all tracks available for extraction with the Route Geometry Extractor (all those red lines) and that the rails would be 'prelaid'. Am I wrong? Probably. Also, looks like the link to Yuri Sos' site is no longer available. Is there another alternative to trainsimulatorworld.com for route building primers? I don't mind spending the $20, but I just don't have it at the moment...The MSTS help seems overly simplistic for such a difficult task. Even just the laying of the first piece of track will probably require me going out and GPS'ing a straight section. I don't suppose the local class I's will let me joy ride for GPS coords, especially in this terror climate.Any basic basic basic first baby steps would be grand.Sorry if a lot of this is "Not another newbie" junk. I've tried the search function and it seems like no matter what I put in the search box, just about every thread is returned. Sigh. Thanks for y'alls patience.
Jim

RE: Faq'd out Newbie....

Hmmm. I just tried this:http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/tutorials/And it's working at the moment. Gotta remember that site does sometimes go down for a while, them Aussies have a lot of trouble hanging on, being upside down on the bottom of the world and all. Coming back an hour or two later and cliking the refresh button usually works if you do happen to catch it offline. As for the questions, no, no, no, and no, unsupported poorly documented translated from Japanese by a Frenchman who was under the delusion he knew English, Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here.I too had the same impression you did, I extracted my route near Marias Pass, and was astonished to see no track and no mountains, just a flat green billiard table. I carved all my terrain by hand, but there is a thing called a DEM extractor somewhere, plus marker flag generating programs that lay out the survey of the route.www.3Dtrains.com might also have some answers.

For laying out the route, check the recent thread on marker files. I use USAPhotoMaps as a starting guide (it's free - do a Google search or check the file library). If you have a starting set of coordinates, you can find topos and aerial photos for any section of the US. That will let you set markers down that you can follow. If you want the terrain to go with it, check out DEMEX (www.digital-rails.com). I think you can still do all you need to do using their demo version, although it's a bit more work than if you get the full payware. You'll also need to find the DEM files, which are available for free in various locations. Do a search on "DEM download sites" or something similar. The Route Editor does not make the task of route building simple, that's for sure. But search, ask, read, and do a few test routes and pretty soon you'll get the hang of it. Andy

The RGE only establishes the location in the world of your route. No route components are created except for the tiles. When you finish with RGE, you have flat, green land. It is up to you to create the terrain and add EVERYTHING that makes a route realistic.Cal Rasmussen
