Ever notice how the rails get not-so-curved as the radius of the curve gets larger? I started getting really annoyed with this, so I created replacement shapes for the Kuju orginal shapes. I created new 2000, 1500, 1000, and 500 meter curves, in 20, 10, and 5 degree turns, for 1, 2, 3, and 4 tracks. I'm considering doing the 250-meter radius curves too, but the jagged curves aren't so noticeable at the tighter radii. Here's some pictures of what I've done:Original Kuju track

Smooth tracks - no more jagged rails! – image 5I've tested them, and although the poly count is higher with my new curves, I used LODs extensively to reduce impact on framerates, and actually I haven't seen any drop in framerates at all.All you got to do is drag the shapes to the GLOBAL/SHAPES folder and overwrite the orignals. No modification to the tsection.dat file or any route editor time is necessary. It affects any and all routes on your MSTS installation.I'd like to test it out with some people to make sure it works okay before I upload to the file library (it works great on my machine), so if you'd like get smoothed, send me an email with your email address and I'll send you a zip file (858Kb) with the shapes.Cheers,
Mark

RE: Smooth tracks - no more jagged rails!

Hi Mark !I am on your list of BETA testers. What happened ? I am BETA testing a friend's extension of the MARIAS-3, using them extensively !Talking about kinky larger curves, I wish somebody would do something about the kink at the 2_5° switch Frog and reduce the over-wide gap of the Blades in the automatic 10° switch ! RE: Smooth tracks - no more jagged rails!

Hey Otto. Since you've been so helpful testing mtracks, I just didn't want to assume that you'd want to take the time to test the smoother tracks. If you'd like to test these, just let me know and I'd be happy to send you a copy."I am BETA testing a friend's extension of the MARIAS-3, using them extensively !"BTW, what are you using extensively on your friends extension?Mark

RE: Smooth tracks - no more jagged rails!

Hi Mark !I am always in the Front Line when there is an opportunity to improve the appearance and functionality of MSTS Tracks and Switches ! My friend has extended the MARIAS-3 from WHITEFISH to ATHOL, more than doubling the Route's length:
Smooth tracks - no more jagged rails! – image 10Hoping to release it under the name of MARIAS-KOOTANIA.It's mainly single and double standard MSTS tracks but think that he did a good job with the Scenery which was reproduced from the actual landscape.Doing another one, the UK-GWR-MIDLAND TODDINGTON Route in the Cheltenham, Gloucestershire area, a bit like the Severn Valley but using UK-FINESCALE Tracks only, which I think are the best as far as appearance is concerned ! E-Mail on the way !Take Care, O t t o.

At least make it prototypical and call it Kootenai...

Leiv Eiriksson was first - Christoffer Columbus used a Viking map!

RE: Smooth tracks - no more jagged rails!

My mistake ! It was Kootenia to start with until we realised that it is really KOOTENAI and Athol is spelled ATHOLL ! O t t o

Awesome! I would love to get my hands on that route! Any extention of Marias Pass is great (including Whitefish 5).I really like those track pictures, they do look more smoother and realistic.Unfortunally I won't be able to get it...I hit the time limit.-BeaverMon, AKA Ben-

RE: Smooth tracks - no more jagged rails!

Thanks to all who have responded and have been interested in testing. I appologize if I didn't return any emails, as I have received quite a number of them. I have now a good number of beta testers, so no more are needed. I hope to have the track uploaded in the very near future, as soon as I get the thumbs up from the testers.Cheers,
Mark

Downloaded from file library and installed. No problems to date and looks GREAT! FYI I use a lot of routes usings different criteria, from purchesed routes to routes using 'X-Tracks' to routes using custom track sections. I also use Judd Spittler's rail texture on most routes.
