Aug-18-01, 01:37 AM (EST) "DEM's for Canada" Does anybody have any DEM data for Canada? They seem to be state secrets. I have tried to make mountains for my CPR route and it is way too time consuming. Please help! Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-19-01, 01:58 PM (EST) 2. "RE: DEM's for Canada" Thanks. I downloaded the dem's and microdem and am attempting to import the data. I get a floating point divide by zero error. I am in conference with the microdem prof about the error. I hope I can make this work. Have you had any luck with you routes? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-20-01, 09:04 PM (EST) 3. "RE: DEM's for Canada" Hi,
I had no luck with the DEM's. I'm trying the method mentioned in the thread "UK Terrain - How to get good results without DEMs".
The Toporama site: http://toporama.cits.rncan.gc.ca/ has topo maps in detail good enough for this purpose. Find the area you want to model, and get the 1:50,000 map. You can click a link that will open a .gif file of the size 3200x1600x256. Save it. Convert this to .bmp in a paint program. To find the 3 lat/long points mentioned in the above thread, click on the map on the website. The webmap will give you the lat/long for any point you click on.
There are no elevation marks on the contour lines, or benchmarks, but it is a place to start. I happen to have the paper topo map for the area I want to recreate, with elevations and contour markings on it.
This will be an experiment in patience.I am currently downloading a 35 MB file from Canada3D. This is supposed to be a DEM but the scale may be too large. I will see.
Good Luck!
NC
