Colleagues,Attached is a image of the lowest trestle (in height) on Lookout Pass, and to the right, lower down, you can see where another will go in place on the next to lowest level of this route. The other image is of the eastbound Empire Builder, circa 1949/50 on Marias Pass. I have been examining Marias pass of late in RE and what I find is curious. KUJU etc. made an effort to compensate for curves, hence you will find that the gradient lessens DRAMATICALLY going into a curve, far more change than I believe any of us has allowed on our routes. I don't compensate for curves at all, myself, which is not correct either, but does avoid a host of bumps & grinds that I find to be objectionable. I have noticed changes as much as .3, while I tried to stay less than .05 on my routes.J. H. Sullivan

RE: RMD-2, and the Empire Builder on Marias

KUJU definitely did some things "differently". The track in the default Marias is a very poorly laid by any standards. However, as fixed by Bob Seidier(sp?) en company, I still find Marias a very enjoyable route. I haven't taken the time to replace the default trees with Phil Voxland's excellent work, but have a feeling doing so would kick it up another notch or two.
