Ok, here is a problem I have run across. The other night I had to do a system recovery for my computer. After reinstalling MSTS and then installing my backed up Tucson-El Paso route that I've been working on, I opened it in the route editor only to see a great white void. No terrain, no track, no nothing. Any ideas???? Thanks for any ideas!!!

RE: Great White Void

Already checked that. I have jumped to different points where I know for a fact there is track and scenery. The track and scenery is there suspended in air, with no terrain, just the white void below.

RE: Great White Void

I had this happen to all my non-default routes a while ago. I could never fix it and re-installed all the routes. Unfortunately, my son's route hadn't been backed up for a while and it's now in limbo (perhaps a good term for this event) until a solution can be found. Great White Void – image 3The route start tile is set. Loading the route in MSTS crashes with an S-DS once the "Loading" graphic reaches the last bar on the right. Loading it in RE gets the image above. Start to move away from this spot and MSTS crashes with an S-DS. Once I've seen an error message about something not being "in sync", but that's not been repeatable.Chris and I would be interested in any possible solutions.RegardsYuri.

RE: Great White Void

Ok, maybe someone can explain to me what has happened here. Upon looking at things further and discovering that all my track/scenery was still there, just suspended in mid air at what ground level should be for the terrain, the RE was placing the camera at sea level well below the track level. So now I decided that maybe I just needed to re-DEM everything for some reason? I opened the route in DEMEX..all the marker files are still located and show up but, no route tiles show up. I tried refreshing, etc and still nothing. So then I went into the RGE and opened the quad tree, it is there yet it wont show in Demex. So now I decided to regenerate some of the tiles....they did, with a prompt that they were overwriting existing tiles that really didn't show up in the RE or DEMEX. Now the new tiles generated show up in Demex and I was able to regenerate the terrain and the problem is solved ina round about way. I just dont understand how things could get so screwed up when I know I used a good back up of the route???Here is another question, is there anyway to just save the track database, delete everything, regenerate tiles, re-DEM and then place the track files back in???

Was your route backed up to CD? If so, it is likely that all files got set to read-only. Make sure ALL files in your route folder and all sub folders are not set to read-only. Cal Rasmussen

Okay, I've been looking at routes without the terrain data and the picture Yuri showes is exactly what you get. Looks like your terrain files somehow got lost?
You could generate the terrain again if you first backup the world folder with all w-files. Generate the terrain and then put back the w-files and rebuild the tdb. Actually I have not done this myself but I think it should work.

You're missing the \TD folder and/or the \Tiles folder.http://www.train-sim.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=4559&forum=DCForumID6&archive=yesThe \World\*.w files contain visual info on all the objects, so those are okay.

The effect would be the same if the files in those folders were read-only. That's the problem with backing up to CD. You have to remember to clear the read-only attribute on all files.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Great White Void

Hi JimThanks for wading in on this one.>You're missing the \TD folder and/or the \Tiles folder. The .TD folder is there with 2 entries, a .td file and a td_idx.dat file. The \tiles folder is there with 798 .t files, 36 .bk files, but no e_raw n_raw or y_raw files. How does one regenerate y_raw files? This route was never stored on CD and CROA reports no read-only files.RegardsYuri.

e.raw and n.raw regenerate by themselves from the info in the y.raw, but to the best of my knowledge there's no way to regenerate a missing y.raw. You could re-extract them, but then you'd have all flats with terrain.ace on them. I think, JohnCS, Mike Simpson, and assorted others were attempting to decode the \Tiles files, I think the .t is terrtex and the y.raw is elevation stuff. Mike would know, since Route Riter extracts the terrtex info from one of those.Depending on what the route was like previously this might or might not be a complete disaster, if it was DEMmed it can be DEMmed again, then just copy the y_raw files into the route, instant mountains and valleys. One thing to bear in mind is that if you have any set of y_raw files at all for the route, no matter how old, you can copy those in, then select track sections and hit the Y key to update whatever you did to the terrain since the last good backup. Here's a wierd one, PO&N 8 with the six y.raw files from PO&N 3.1:
