I am re-visiting my route after a long brake and I am trying to relate the values on my track charts to the metric grade values in MSTS. For example, the conrail track chart that I am using lists grades like .11, .13, .96. How do I convert these into the .150, .300, values in RE?
Yes, but the MSTS numbers are not grade percentage, they're degrees above/below level (0.00 is straight, 90.00 would be straight up). To convert from degrees to grade percentage, multiply by 1.75, to convert from grade percentage to degrees, divide by 1.75.Default max elevation (without using Mike Vone's trick) in MSTS is 3 degrees, which is a 5.25% grade.
That's not scientificly correct but a very good approximation for the grade values we are using in MSTS. For much larger grades you would get a recognizable error with this method (45 degrees aint 78.75%, it's 100%). Mathematically correct would be: degrees = arctan(percentage/100) percentage = 100 * tan(degrees)
I found a document on the steam4me website and downloaded MSTS Poker. I can directly input the grade values from the chart (into Poker) and get the MSTS equivlanent. It is working pretty well with one exception, trying to determine the starting altitude of the track! A little trial and error is involved there. Thanks for the replies,
