I have figured out how to get Photoshop to open _y.raw files after re-reading some posts on this forum, but how do you save them once you have edited them. Is it possible to export them to the same .raw format if you only have the Adobe Photoshop Elements. I tried saving them as .raw files but the terrain just goes white in the RE.http://groups.msn.com/MSTSNarrowGauge (Now being updated more oftern) Jonathan Lewis jonathanmlewis@msn.com
I assume you read this thread, but if not, it has some useful information and links to other threads in it.http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/11549.htmlI don't know all of the capabilities of Photoshop Elements, but these are 16-bit grayscale files, so you have to be able to open, edit and save 16-bit files. This is something that the full version of Photoshop does somewhat well (I have version 6, and I am told the newer versions do it even better), but this may be the key you are missing with Photoshop Elements. What I was doing was converting the files to 8-bit, editing them, and then converting back to 16-bit, then saving as a .raw file. A little dialog box comes up and I would choose header of 0 and then IBM/PC byte order. Hope this helps.

I also use Photoshop Elements, and tried the trick of modifying terrain by opening the .raw files in PE. I had a couple of huge crevices and a towering rift along a couple of DEM borders that I thought I could fix this way. I was able to open the files OK, but when I tried to save them, they were evidently saved as 8-bit files. The end result was that the slopes changed from nice, smooth slopes to terraced hills because the color variations were so much greater in the 8-bit files compared to the 16-bit. So I've just gone back to taking care of those problems in the old-fashioned way using the terrain tools. Elements just doesn't seem to have the ability to save the files in 16-bit format, which is a shame.Andy
Jonathan, <http://www.train-sim.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=8356&forum=DCForumID6> I wrote a thread on this over a year ago. I used it quite a bit when I was shaping my terrain but it has been a while. If I remember correctly: In Photoshop, the top of the tile is North. Photoshop will attempt to guess the format of the graphic when you open the .raw file. You may need to help it the first time by making sure that the size is 256 by 256, Channel count is set to 1, Depth is set to 16 bits, Byte order is set to IBM PC, and 0 header bytes. The byte order is the big key here. When you save the tile back, it should save back in the same format. If you don't select IBM PC format, it will save the least significant byte as the most significant byte which is why you had a screwy tile.Larry
Thanks everyone for your help. But I still can't seem to get it to save in a format MSTS will read even as a 8 bit file. In the RE the tile that I opened just goes white. Andy what version of PE are you using? I am only using version 1 that could be why. I have the CD for PE 2 somewhere I will try and install that and see if that makes it work. http://groups.msn.com/MSTSNarrowGauge (Now being updated more oftern) Jonathan Lewis jonathanmlewis@msn.com
I've got 2.0. Read through Larry's post again - there's some tricks to getting the file configured correctly, and I don't recall what they are. I'd try that before installing the upgrade. I suspect that your problem is more due to how you're saving the file than what version of PE you've got. I'd really love to be able to do some terrain editing that way, but I don't think it's going to work for me unless I spend quite a bit more money Good luck!Andy
What I am wanting to do is to try and get rid of this dam in the Platte Canyon as it was flooded after the railway closed and the track bed is under the water. Anyway these are the settings it had when I opened it And I these are the only options it gave me then I saved it Hope some-one can help me out here. Thanks everyone for your help so far.http://groups.msn.com/MSTSNarrowGauge (Now being updated more oftern) Jonathan Lewis jonathanmlewis@msn.com
I am using Photoshop 6.0. Looks like that is part of the difference. When I save, the part greyed out on yours is still there. It looks like you are just going to have to do it using a piece of track or the built in terrain editor tool.Larry
If that dam is all you want to modify you will accomplish it faster and easier with the tools in RE than spending time trying to get it to work with PhotoShop. Just adjust the terrain as you lay the track.
