RE: A New England Route!

That's wonderful news. Is it a passenger or freight route, or both? I would imagine the Boston link to be passenger. Do you think you will be on schedule? You're only giving yourself a little more than 90 days to release.BTW, the guilfordrailfan link is broken. I get a page not found error.Good luck and have fun.A New England Route! – image 1

RE: A New England Route!

I don't want to discourage you, but I hope you've got a good knowledge of the route editor and a good start. I've been working on my route off and on for at least 9 months now (probably 2-3 hours/day for at least 6 months working time), and I've barely put a dent in the scenery. I don't plan on being ready for beta for another 2-3 months, and that is provided I get back to working on it constantly again.Shawn

RE: A New England Route!

this route is being cancelled, i will not create it because of these reason. #1 I only know the Rumford Branch, #2 way too big for me. #3 too much space to be taken. #4 it always crashes when i save it.

RE: A New England Route!

Why not do the Rumford branch then?
#1 you know it
#2 not so darn big
#3 less to keep track of
#4 easier to backupRoutes don't have to be huge to be
interesting. Personally, I tend to
avoid activities that take more than
an hour anyway, so I for one would be
happy to see a small route with maybe
half a dozen places to switch cars
and some eye-catching scenery. Do you
have the guide to route building Mike
Vone wrote?A good activity would be picking up a
set of cars at the transfer yard, then
taking the train out and back, making
pickups and dropoffs along the way,
then running around the train for the
trip back at the end of the branch.Lloyd

The Rumford Branch i will do, but it will only be based on Guilford, theres passing sidings and alot of switches for cars to be dropped off. i dont need the book, but i have a hard time createin yards on a curve. lol

Yards on curves are best done with dynamic track, although some consider dynamic track to be voodoo Best of luck!Shawn

Hmmmm, the Housatonic, now THAT would be a cool route. I live close to Danbury, CT, so I occasionally see them pulling the garbage train

My personal picks on a New England route would be somewhere on the BAR (now MMA) line from NMJ to Millonocket and the ex-NH Shoreline in southern CT. BTW have you seen the upcoming Central Vermont route? That's New England. We also have MBTA Boston to Providence.

Glad to know ya, Dave! Two in one day? That is strange. Unfortunatly most of there runs are during the afternoon when I'm at work. If I catch a GP35 doing some switching on the old Maybrook south of Brookfield I'm lucky! You live near Canaan, egh? That sure is a pretty drive up Rt. 7. I go up toward Kent Falls alot during the summer. I love that waterfall.Have a great Memorial Day weekend!Dan Godfrey

Well I better go dust off those DEMs of North Adams and Zoar. I'll give Hoosac Tunnel another whirl. Now if I can just figure out how to use DEMEX again. This time, feel free to help out if you want to. Make it a group effort.Hoosac

RE: A New England Route!

I agree James, Mechanicville or Rotterdam Jct to Rigby Yard would be the ultimate route for me. The only problem is that route would be like 300 miles of mainline. That might be a bit much to tackle.

RE: A New England Route!

Well you got me all excited and then ruined my dreams minutes later but I'll forgive you. I have always wanted to do Boston to Portland. Only two reasons I don't. 1: Route Editor Crashing 2: I have no track charts so I don't know the grades. What I do have is USAphotomaps photos of the route, markers, Dems, Extracted terrain. For right now I don't plan on going any further because of the above two reasons. Unless anyone has track charts of ST district 2 that I could use...

RE: A New England Route!

Sorry about that. I just had an terrible time building the first route with game crashes, and line relocations I just gave up. Well this time will be different. If anyone wishes to join up to do a group project on this route, please say so. As of now, I created a new route but haven't got the quad tree in yet. I only have the Zoar and North Adams DEMs. I'd like to make this route from North Adams to East Deerfield yard but now DEMS cost $ If anyone knows where to get DEMs from Zoar to East Deerfield for free, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

RE: A New England Route!

I got my DEMs from mapmart.com I think it was. It is suggested in the DEMEX tutorial which is burried on the demex website. They had everything in ST district 2 for free. You can only download like ten at a time but there is a way around that that works and is explained in that tutorial. Soooooo, your a district 4 kinda guy Hoosac. I'm more of a district 2 guy but I might be able to offer some help in constructing a route out there. The grades are certainly more challenging out there, and the tunnel would be neat too. Even if not with the route itself, I could reskin some stuff appropriate to the area. I might even be willing to try my hand at creating some custom objects if you could get pictures. I could do some activities as well. I've only made a few before but I had no trouble so I think I could do it again. But I don't want to get myself overcommitted by saying YES I'll build a route with you because with the nice weather just arriving its harder to sit in front of this computer if you know what I mean.

I know what you mean by sitting in front of your PC while the weather is nice. I was thinking that I might make the tunnel double tracked like it was in the 50's. But I'm not sure if i should Electrify it or not. What do you guys think?

RE: A New England Route!

well guys, can we all settle with the Rumford Branch? i mean, my god guys, this is mt first time to build and wanting to complete a route. theres no one im gonna do a 100 mile main line from Portland to Boston on my first try, but if anyone wants to, the grades are easy, mostly its 1% to 1.5% nothing higher, problem is i dont know where the grades are. as for the Rumford Branch, im not gonna do the grades, and the reason, my video card is out of date, so its not workin properly and i cant tell if the tracks are above or below ground, but if anyone wants to update the branch, email me and i will have to give you a list of what you need to edit it all.

http://www.digital-rails.com/files/demex_tutorial.pdfThat should be it Hoosac. So you are really doing this huh? You're getting me all excited. I'm only 22 so I don't exactly remember the 1950's. I'm more interested in the current operations but however you choose to create it, I won't complain. I wouldn't really like the electrified track though. Oh yeah, take note, the tutorial tells you how to create the terrain with the unregistered DEMEX but I don't think you can distribute it if you don't do it with a registered version.
