For the past month or so I've been building the Mount Gretna Narrow Gauge railroad, a two foot gauge line in Pennsylvania which was abandoned in the early 1900's. It was a 4.5 mile "recreational" railroad leaving a park in Mount Gretna and climbing Governor Dick Mountain. I don't have any good pictures, but here is the off-scale Eureka along Lake Conewago.

RE: Announcing... the Mount Gretna Narrow Gauge!

This is a fantastic idea for a route. I live only about 5 miles from Mount Gretna and have hiked the trail to the tower at Governor Dick many times. The Lebanon County Historical Society has a small book, about 15 pages or so, that focuses on the Mount Gretna Narrow Gauge Railroad. Half of the book is composed of pictures, a map of the line and a closeup map of the station area. Good luck!Eric

Yes... Fantastic because it's so easy to build! I found a Conewago Hotel in the default OE, but have been making the rest on my own. I don't like seeing bridges and things from other routes just because the person doesn't want to learn GMAX. They don't always fit very well. When the route is finished, almost all will be my work. Of course, it's only 5 miles! Do you happen to have any info on the rifle range you can give me, by any chance? I know very little about it.

RE: Announcing... the Mount Gretna Narrow Gauge!

Recent news.. The turntable and enginehouse were just placed, they look very good for being static, and the turntable has a built-in mask so there is no hole in the ground around it, and you can see in the pit. The spring and steps at the terminal have been in place for a few days, the concrete base for the C&L RR. station is in, and two trestles at the rifle range are in, specially built by me for this route.

RE: Announcing... the Mount Gretna Narrow Gauge!

AND MORE RECENT NEWS!!!... Yesterday I climbed the trail from Pinch Road to the top of the hill. I found out that very little of the trail actually follows the old right-of-way, and the only way of following it is with a map or compass. I went up the tower with a compass, looked out, and discovered I approached from the wrong side, explaining the steep grades and sharp curves. I took the right route most of the way down, but there is really very little to be learned because the forest is so thick.

If you have a digital camera it would be cool to see some pics from the old abandoned ROW...Announcing… the Mount Gretna Narrow Gauge! – image 5

RE: Announcing... the Mount Gretna Narrow Gauge!

There aren't any cameras I can get. I know some people who have them, but they all hate me. But I'll tell you what it looks like: A side of a hill, covered with thick forest, has a little fill only about 4-5 ft wide at the top. A few loose stones lay across this fill, and some larger rocks are half submerged in it. Along side the right-of-way on both sides are a very thick, but low, covering of weeds. This is what it looks like all the way from the terminal to the top of the mountain, except at the road crossing and Lake Conewago.Try typing "Mount Gretna Narrow Gauge" into a search engine and look at the results. There won't be many, but the ones I've found are good.

RE: Announcing... the Mount Gretna Narrow Gauge!

The route is practically finished. There aren't many files in it I'd need to get permission for to upload it, and it is very small (17.7 MB). If I compact it with RR and remove the few remaining unnecessary files, I probably could send it to a beta-tester. Anyone want to be one? Anyone interested in having the route?
