Update to Stupid RE Tricks – image 1

http://www.train-sim.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=7799&forum=DCForumID6So, tracklaying has been progressing quite well and it got to the point where flying 30 miles or more to get to where I left off was becoming tedious. I did a search to find out how to change the route start tile location and came up with the above thread, now closed and archived. After reading it I thought, GREAT! Sounds like a piece of cake! I go ahead and make the changes and I go into RE and... WTF!?!!??? It's the same damned place I've been starting since I first generated the tiles! So I'm thinking, okay I must have missed a space or a bracket or something in the syntax and it's going back to the original start location by default. (how the heck it was doing THAT I couldn't imagine because as far as I knew THIS file controlled that)Well after about 3/4 of an hour of farting around changing the file and rebooting (just in case RE was pulling the info from cached paging) I was still frustrated. It was "only logical conclusion" time. Like any good computer user should, I had made a copy of the file, which was named automatically "Copy of Crow1.trk" and which I had left in the same folder with the Crow1.trk file I had been editing. You wouldn't have thought that would be a problem, right? I mean, everybody knows it's going to be looking for "Crow1.trk" and nothing else. Right?WRONG! LOL! Oddly enough RE was using the "Copy of" instead of what I figured it should be using. I'm guessing that RE uses the first .trk file it finds regardless of what it's named because when I removed the copy everthing worked as advertised. It figures. The game is fussy about naming conventions with everything else but not this.<Heavy Sarcasm> Boy, there's nothing like consistency is there? </Heavy Sarcasm>Anyway, if this is already known... nevermind. Hehehe Thanks for letting me vent if nothing else.

RE: Update to Stupid RE Tricks...

Lone,A long time ago, I did exactly the same thing with numerous eng and wag files. I couldn't figure out why all of a sudden I had two of everything in the Activity Editor; totally indistiguishable there. It seems that MSTS ignores the "Copy of" part in the AE also.regards,
charlie

RE: Update to Stupid RE Tricks...

Next time that you work on the route, note the tile location of the camera and write down the numbers on TileX and TileZ boxes, blue highlighted from the archived post, or, the lat, long numbers. (Camera X and Z will give more precise spotting if needed.) Next time you start the RE, enter those numbers in the boxes and use the Jump button. You can also change the start location as described in the archived thread. But type exactly so you don't screw up the entry as this is actually un compiled C programming code that you are playing with.If you got a copy of file, you must have invoked some other command or double clicked on one file while holding down the Ctrl key.SRV Ron

RE: Update to Stupid RE Tricks...

Actually it is not c or c++ code at all in the .trk file. Both c and c++ end each line of code with a ";" it is more than likely just unicode. However caution is still urged when modifying these files.

RE: Update to Stupid RE Tricks...

KevThanks for sharing the info. I use Jumper now, to 'jump' around the route. One reason I use it, is because I've got a few signals in the route (couldn't resist), and sometimes I corrupt everything by adding roads. So then, I have to go back and re-install links on all the (absolute) signals. Couldn't do it without Jumper, but then again I could never stay focused on one spot.Mark

I'm not sure if I understood well; I'd just like to help.
You don't need to edit any file to start from another tile.
I also used to have before those problems that the Start Tile didn't change. But this happens because you think that you select the tile, and you don't select it at all.To change the Route Start Tile, I just use the Route Geometry Editor.
Make sure you selected it by dragging a rectangle around only your new start tile, and then right-click and choose Route Editor Start Tile, as always; Now it must be updated indeed.I hope this can help.Good luck...

Well, yeah I could always do it that way too but editing the .trk file is simple and less worrisome. I'd rather avoid the possibility that RGE will screw something up although it never has yet, touch wood. What with all the horror stories I've seen posted here, the fewer opportunities I take to test the law of averages the better off I'll be I'm sure. Now that I know to make sure there's only one .trk file in the route's folder, editing it as I need is much more convenient. Especially when I can keep several different locations archived in comments in the same file.

RE: Update to Stupid RE Tricks...

But whatever else you do Lone Wolf, BACK-UP the Route first, including all it's folders right down to the WORLD Folder and including what's in it's Root. That way you got all that has changed, including it's Tsection.dat and other Databases, to be RESTORED after a problem ! O t t o

Oh I do that all right. I'm finally as happy as I can be with my terrain. With only not even 1/4 of the track laid yet the route sits at almost 500Mb uncompressed and there's NO way I want to start from scratch... again.(long story related to not being happy with the way it was going, several times)And that's AFTER I deleted all the extra tiles I added to create my Distant Mountain terrain from the standard terrain instead of DEMing the low tiles. (another long story)

RE: Update to Stupid RE Tricks...

Glad to hear that, Lone Wolf !It always upsets me reading a post from a guy who spent months on creating a Route and runs into trouble and not being able to come up with a clever solution have to tell him to start all over again. It only happened to me once in my programming life, having had to re-write some of my Accounting Software code all over again, not having maintained sufficient back-ups !Lesson learned the hard way and never forgotten ! Just want to spare others having to go through similar ! Take Care and Gook Luck with your Route ! O t t o

Say, bye the bye Otto, I was reading in another forum here wherein a fellow mentioned about how you have set up separate installs of MSTS for each route. It was a topic unrelated to that specifically so could you relate how you've done that or provide a link to the topic if you've already done so?
