Has anyone attempted to model a large, rail-served gravel pit? If so, could you please provide me with some pics of your work, and possibly a list of what objects and terrain textures you used? Thanks!Bruce Bridges

RE: Gravel Pits

Still haven't had a chance to drive by the gypsum quarry in National City. The weather was too crappy for pics Yesterday.I would suggest that you create a set of terrain textures the color of the material in the pit. Sculpt the pit and piles using the RE terrain shaping tools. If you need some defined shaped piles of gravel, you could create them as objects.Depending on the size of the quarry, loading and transporting could either be by large off road trucks and end loaders, available in the forum library, or a conveyer, loading tower system. I have seen both setups. You may need, depending on the quarry, a large dragline crane. A "wet" quarry will have a barge and sucker tool that removes sand and gravel from the bottom of the pond in the quarry. Some of smaller sand and gravel quarries in the area, where the ice age left the sand and gravel presorted to size, operate this way.Unloading is either a rotary dump system, or, smaller conveyer system such as the photos that I sent you. There are also wagons that are designed to spread replacement ballast on the roadbed for maintainance.SRV Ron

RE: Gravel Pits

Can someone PLEASE help me here? All of the quarries in the area where my route is set use conveyors. I really need a conveyor system and loading tipples to make this thing work, but I have no clue how to model it myself.

RE: Gravel Pits

BruceThis is not exactly related but if you visit http://www.westshore.com/ and click on Equipment there are a couple of good pics there. Some overview shots are here:

A possibility could be the power plant(s), I think some had seperate shapes for covered conveyors.

RE: Gravel Pits

If you have ever run the Mesaba Electric, there's an open pit iron mine on it that will give you some ideas, as the trains run down to the bottom of the pit.

RE: Gravel Pits

I've been using DEM all along... still, I like to enhance river valleys and such myself, just to get a "crisper" appearance.

RE: Gravel Pits

Made it to the open pit mines at National City. No pics. However, both mines are using enclosed sorters with at least three conveyers coming out of them to sort piles. They are several stories in size and sheeted in tin siding. The one site has hoppers, they load on highway trucks with multiple axle trailers to limit the per axle load of their 100ton cargos on the dual trailers. (40 tires per trailer on five axles.)The other looks like large end loaders load the rail cars there from the sorting piles. That's the mine with the huge bucket crane.Sometime this coming week, I will find the mine on Terraserver where the conveyer system should be quite visable.SRV Ron
