I'm working on a major update of the route, adding about 44 miles of yard tracks in Denver and up to Utah Junction, and lots of other improvewments. I even got the crossing below to work with signals.Don

Good to see your working on an update 44 miles of yard tracks can't be an easy thing to add. I will be in Denver on the South Park route not before too long but their were not as many yards in the 1880's as in the era your doing.http://groups.msn.com/MSTSNarrowGauge (Now being updated more oftern)

RE: Rollins Pass Route getting a new look

Not many tracks today either down between the depots. Went down there last week and was appalled at all that has been removed. Just bare dirt except for the freight route on the west and 4 passenger tracks to the east. The first 2 depot tracks have even been removed. One can no longer walk out of Union Station and find a track or a train. It is a road. Somehow one has to go under the road I guess to get to what is now called track 1, perhaps through the tunnel that used to serve all other tracks. How did I forget that RTD's light rail goes in there next to the railroad tracks these days. That's how I got there. Apparently RTD bought the entire area and made a mess of it. One cannot even walk the depot platforms anymore without getting rousted by RTD's rental cops and threatened with a call to the police.I used a 1936 map to put in what I did. Lots of fun. With lots of parallel yard tracks it goes pretty quickly. Other areas were not as easy. Please add a spur to your route at Bailey's, running up Crow Hill to my house. It will require switchbacks.Thanks.Don

Not many tracks today either down between the depots. Went down there last week and was appalled at all that has been removed. You can thank coors field and the park ave rebuild for that. At least there are 4 tracks still at the depot. Denver has at least kept the depot in place. In Salt Lake the tracks are ripped up to the UP depot and its now a shopping mall. One can no longer walk out of Union Station and find a track or a train. It is a roadThe road is for RTD buses. It just occupies the first track. If you walk into the depot you'll see an underground tunnel that takes you to each track. I think its been like that for a long time. Its better for the passengers to travel under the tracks rather than across them. Then no on gets hit in a busy terminal.Personally I'd rather see Union Station used for light rail and Amtrak, then to have it disappear forever.Where did you get your 1936 map? Since I do switching down there I'd love to see what it used to look like.Nick BNSF Conductor

RE: Rollins Pass Route getting a new look

I assume the tunnel is the same one I have used many years ago to get to trains. Times do change to be sure. The 1936 map, and others, are in the map pocket at the back of the book, Denver's Railroads, by Kenton Forrest and Charles Albi, published by the Colorado Railroad Museum, 1981.Don

I'm new to TS, but I look forward to this update. I've installed the route just a few days ago and I'm exploring it now. I hope to see more activities developed for RP also, as the route has many interesting possibilities. Thanks for your good work.

RE: Rollins Pass Route getting a new look

Welcome aboard. I've got one steam passenger activity over the pass, with 24 station stops, about 10 or 12 meets, but about 40 non-default files that are required. Needs some adjustments due to new track in Denver. I expect to design other activities also. (None is included in the route download, and none has been uploaded to the library yet.)Don

RE: Rollins Pass Route getting a new look

LAST EDITED ON May-06-04 AT 08:00 PM (EDT)

I believe you are referring to the first photo. That is 23rd Street looking to the northwest. The lower train is coming out of Union Station, which I have now double-tracked as it once was. It will cross the South Platte just out of view to the left. The upper train is coming south out of your "CB&Q" yard heading for Texas. As you may see in the second photo, there are 5 leads to that yard now, plus a 6th lead out of it to some sidings over by Union Station. Per 1936. I did not install your yards north of the river, but simply head out for Chicago past the bridge. This now provides the Denver wye, or at least one of them. The UP lead to Cheyenne is improved, with some of the yard tracks above Union Station. Fox Junction has 6 new tracks, one of which continues along the Moffat and then heads out for Montana. There are now 5 tracks instead of 2 crossing over 38th Ave..
North Yard has double the previous number of tracks. The open area at Utah Junction between the old yard and the bypass is now filled in with yard tracks and servicing facilities. There are now double track leads coming in from Colorado Springs for both passenger and for freight, but I will not be adding the yards south of 15th Street. I have added the 16th Street viaduct. Although the photo lacks buildings, the reverse angle shows numerous buildings, sidings, and service roads. I am off to answer your other post. This is sooooooooooo fun!!!!Don
