I have been getting a lot of email from people wondering if I have abandoned work on this route. Well in truth I did abandon work on the original route a couple of months back after trying out TSM and making some custom objects. I then decided to make a fresh start on the whole route using some free high resolution Canadian Goverment DEM. The new route includes the Nanaimo to Courtenay section of the line which features numerous wooden and steel trestles. I made the addition after doing some research and finding enough information to make a prototypical repsentation of the line for the the mid 80s to early 90s. A lot of people had asked that this be added just for the running the RDCs (Via Dayliner) which didn't seem too appealing to myself at the time. Someone then sent me some information on the freight operations and I found that there was also an interesting amount of freight traffic on the line at that time. CP used to run over powered locals to Courtenay which at times consisted of 3 GP38s and 1 to 12 cars. It didn't matter what sort of tonnage there was there always seemed to be three units on the point - weird. Well below are some images of the new route. I haven't got a lot done on the new route due to being in a vehicle accident and being in hospital for a couple of weeks but I will be spending the coming weeks sitting at my computer working on this project as I am not supposed to be moving around too much while things heal up. What better way to pass the time!ENR3005

Thanks for the update. IMO this will be one of the most anticipated Canadian (or Canadien, however you prefer to have it spelled) routes.
I hope you feel better in the coming weeks, auto accidents are not any fun.Regards,

Looks great, right down to the prototypical weed-choked tracks! And Erik, since this is the West Coast... Canadian will do fine. I'm sure as a Californian you can relate...

OK, Canadian it is.....have to watch my spelling now days...dont want to accidently offend someone. I had a desire to do this route when it first came out, but my one book about railroading on the island did not give enough info and Rail America was less than helpful when I requested prototype info.
I just hoped a Canadian or someone famalir would do it.Way back in the early days of MSTS there was someone working on it, but he quit several years ago when he got interested in a things. He had some nice CP boxcars, I think that they are still available for download....let me recall where I put the link. Regards,

It does look like a good route. And from the pics I have seen from the real E&N that is right on. Does the E&N still run???

RE: Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway Update

The real E&N is still being run by Rail America - barely though. In December of 2001 they lost their biggest shipper, the Norske Paper Mill in Port Alberni which shipped about 7000 cars a year. Apparently the loss of the shipper was caused by Canadian Pacifics refusal to rebuild a spur to a paper mill in Crofton on a section of the line that they still owned South of Nanaimo. Secondly CP was really slow in interchanging cars after having them ferried over by Rail America to the mainland, some of them would sit in the Coquitlam yard for a week at times. RA and CP have even gone to court over some of the issues and do not seem to be willing to work with each other. CP seems to wants the line to fail so they can sell off their remaining land that is worth a large amount of money. Amazingly enough the line has been almost able to break even on shipping propane, grain and chemicals or about 2500 cars a year. There is hope for the future though. There have been rumors that the Paper Mill might be shipping again by the end of the year. Additionally there are are potential new customers in the Victoria area. There has been talk of a large concrete plant wanting daily service and a new industrial park that would require rail service. There has been even been rumor that CN wants to buy the Port Alberni section of the line and extend it up past Campbell River to ship coal to Japan and China - seems a bit far fetched to me but it is possible. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next couple of months.ENR3005

RE: Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway Update

Hmmm, it is interesting u mentioned the rumor of CN wanting to buy the Port Alberni and extending it to Campbell River. I would like to see the E&N extended to Port Hardy via Campbell River and following Hwy 19 or from Campbell River via Gold River. This extension could also use the current Canfor Logging Railway. I have also heard of the industrial park rumor in Victoria.Aaron

RE: Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway Update

I haven't played around with the AI traffic too much at this point but I do plan to include it eventually. For a small line there was a fair amount of traffic on this line that most people are not aware of. This was no small freight operation and a lot of the trains had lots of power on the head end to deal with the rugged terrain. I have listed most of the operations below for the mid 80s. I will be adding all of these various trains to the activities in someway.Daily - Passenger Dayliner (2 or 3 RDCs)Daily - Victoria Switcher (SW8 working eight or nine industries in the Victoria and Langford area)Tri-weekly and Extras as required - Victoria Freight (2 or 3 GP9s, 35s or 38s with 6 to 20+ cars. This train would also switch all the local industries between Nanaimo and Victoria. The "Extras" mentioned above would sometimes run to Duncan only to switch two large feed mills) Daily and sometimes twice Daily- Port Alberni Freight (3 GP9s, 35s or 38s with 20 to 45+ cars. This train was by far the most busiest on the line and had the most difficult run with the 2.6% grades on both sides of the Port Alberni summit. It wasn't uncommon for trains to have to double the hills)Daily - Nanaimo Switcher (1 GP9, 35 or 38 working eight local industries) Daily - Wellcox yard Switcher (1 GP9, 35 or 38 loading and unloading the rail barges, assembling and breaking down trains)

Tri-weekly and Extras as required - Parksville Local (2 or 3 GP9s, 35s or 38s working four industries in the Parksville area. Sometimes the local would be combined with the Courtenay local and leave its cars at Parksville. This would be a long local at times when combined with the Courtenay turn and may have returned to Nanaimo with as many as 25 cars at times)Twice a Week Courtenay Local - (2 or 3 GP9, 35 or 38 with 1 to 10 cars working four local industries in the Courtenay area)I will also add some odd ball trains that CP ran at times such as a military train that ferried equipment from the Air Force base in Courtenay (Comox) to the Navy base in Victoria (Esquimalt).

I haven't set a release date yet but hopefully in the next couple of months. I still have a lot of work to do. I have scenery from Nanoose Bay to Qualicum Beach and most of the City of Courtenay complete on the Victoria Subdivision or you could say about 30% of the line is complete. On the Port Alberni line I have partial scenery from Parksville to Cameron Lake and I have started on the City of Port Alberni. I have a number of major trestles and bridges on both lines which are going to be time consuming as I have not yet attempted making one in TSM. I have tried retexturing the KHP2 GP38 and it will not map properly. I had some problems with the nose stripes and bell not wanting to become a different color other than the main body color so I gave up on it for the time being. ENR3005

>ENR3005 Well let me try and see what happens can you send me the .ace files and I'll look at it and I'll see what I can do with the nose stripes and the bell. I had the same problems when I retextured my CP SD40-2 in the script scheme and the only problem that I had was with the bell bracket and it was a different color but I found an area on the unit were I got it to turn grey and now it looks good.

RE: Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway Update

Ok I have started to retexturing the KHP2 GP38AC and its going real good now I got to work on the sides of the long hood and the rear where the Yellow stripes were larger than the green stripes. Here is some pics.....This will look good on the E&N. (Even though my post of this unit is in the wrong forum but just to show ya.)

RE: Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway Update

I dug out my old ENR 3005 textures and applied them to the KHP2 38. I gave up on it after not being able to get the headlight and bell to map properly. There were minor differences between 3004 and 3005. 3004 had stripes on the long hood, 3005 did not. 3005 also had snow shields and new plow instead of the standard pilot. 3004 had a standard pilot and the snow shields were removed during the repaint. Here are a couple of screenies of my 3005. Send me a private message with you email address if you would like to play around with the textures.ENR3005
