I have tried repeatedly to load the Silverton Branch this evening, starting with loading XTracks, then the upgrade of my Winzip 8.0 to 9.0. I'm following the instructions to the letter and WinZip is seeing the spanning between the files but it is only loading the 171 MB of the first file.OK, so I tried loading Route Riter - tells me the program needs to upgrade files in my system, do I want to do so? Say yes, it goes through some gyrations and then tells me I have to reboot. Reboot and run the .exe for RR and boolian loop back to the program needs to upgrad files in my system, do I want....ad nauseum.Your thoughts?Herb - I wanna go to Silverton! - Kelsey

RE: Silverton! Yo, Charlie!

Good morning Herb. Working on my second 16 oz. cup of coffee, so I'm almost up to speed. It's been a while, so I'm working from memory here, but 171 MB seems about right for unpacking the archive. Go into the Silverton folder and run the "Installme.bat". If that's the problem, doing this should run it up to about 329 MB.regards,
charlie

RE: Silverton! Yo, Charlie!

Good Morning, still working on mine. I did that. I get hundreds of "Can't find this and can't find that messages" - coalingtower2.s, fences.ace, stockpen_NWR.s, coaltower.ace, microtex.ace, on and on and on. Gotta believe it isn't spanning. Your read-me says it should be 300+ MB.I am going to try it again with my pop-up stopper off. "It came to me in a dream" that I hadn't done that before I downloaded.Give me your thoughts, sir.Herb

Herb,Based on what you've said so far, your previous downloads appear to be OK, and Winzip 9.0 is spanning properly for you.I unzipped the route with Winzip 9.0 again this morning with a fresh download, and folder size is 167 MB (175,622,601 bytes). So you look good to that point. You can't have the final folder size of 329 MB until you have successfully run the Installme.bat. You must have all six of the default routes installed. Additionally, the \Silverton folder must be in the same \Routes folder along with the default routes in order for the Installme.bat to work as written. In other words, when you unzip, point the output to the \Routes folder that contains the defaults.Let me know how you make out...EDIT: Just for your info, when you open "the first file" Silver10.zip with Winzip, you get to see the entire folder file structure whether the other pieces are present or not. However, when you push the go button, Winzip will tell you right away if something is corrupt or a piece is missing.regards,
charlie

Herb - I believe all the files you name are in the default routes. The only one I'm not completely certain about is the stockpen, but I think it's also in the default. Which tells me that the problem is not in the spanned files but in the installed defaults, or at least in the location of the installed defaults relative to the Silverton route. Given your symptoms, I don't think the popup blocker has anything to do with the problems. The process is very unforgiving. You MUST have:+ a ..../Train Simulator/ROUTES/Silverton folder
+ the Installme.bat in ..../Train Simulator/ROUTES/Silverton folder
+ the 6 default routes (USA1, USA2, Europe1, Europe2, Japan1, Japan2) in the .../Train Simulator/ROUTES folder
+ the 6 default route folders with their original folder names and content
+ all of the folders in ..../Train Simulator/ROUTES are read/write (that is, they're not protected as read-only, which can happen if you've copied them from an archive CD)Note that on the default install, you will end up with the full directory as:
C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Train Simulator/ROUTES/SilvertonTo sum up:You will have to have, as a minimum, the following folders in your ROUTES folder:Europe1
Europe2
Japan1
Japan2
Silverton
USA1
USA2If you have removed or renamed any of these folders, the install will not work. If you have removed or renamed any of the files in the folders, the install may not work - it depends on whether the removed or renamed files are used in the Silverton route. Marias Pass 3.0 and Northeast Corridor 4.0 (or other versions of MP and NEC) do not count! It has to be the default routes in the default-named files and folders. It's a pain to have to be as nit-picky as the process requires, but it's faster than downloading and unzipping the files again, especially when that isn't likely to fix the problem. Good luck!AndyEdit - I hate typos!

RE: Silverton! Yo, Charlie!

Yep! That's the problem. Japan and Europe have gone away and the software want parts of them. OK, I'll have to weigh the advantages of a new route vs putting all that crud back. Thanks guys!Herb

One more catch to the installme bat on some addon routes .. it also used the template folder for some of mine. Took awhile to figure out what was going on. It ended up needing all six default routes plus the template folder.RobertR .. ADF-M&RM at http://www.adfrr.com

RE: Silverton! Yo, Charlie!

Herb - you only have to have those routes in place when you run the installme.bat. Once that's done, you can take them off your hard drive again. I'd recommend you put 'em back on, install Silverton, and take 'em off. Andy

RE: Silverton! Yo, Charlie!

Actually, I didn't remove them from the hard drive, but rather moved them to a directory out of MSTS where the program couldn't find them. Ergot, it shouldn't be that much hassle. I'll get to Silverton yet!Hey Charlie, does the "standard gauge version" of the 487 somehow narrow itself down to run on the route, or what?Herb

Looks like you caught us on this one. We've been doing things this way since the early days, and perhaps take things for granted. It seems like forever ago that I've noticed something in a readme about the need for the default routes. From what you had said, it looked like you had pared your install down to just USA1 and USA2. If you stick with us for a while, those will wear thin pretty shortly. Their excellent replacements, NEC4.0 and Marias Pass 3.1, are also not available to you without a complete install. And that extends to just about every freeware route in every library out there. Further, recently several payware outfits have discovered that they can use default also without getting their knickers sued off by MS. This mostly applies to payware coming out of Europe. This started a huge discussion over on uktrainsim, with some folks complaining that they were "paying for default twice".

>Hey Charlie, does the "standard gauge version" of the 487
>somehow narrow itself down to run on the route, or what? Uh, yes and no... As far as operation, the sim just doesn't care. You can run anything anywhere as long as bounding boxes or coupler extensions are OK with the twisty windey places. As far as visuals, luckily the locomotive is of outside frame design, with drivers mostly obscured inside the frame. What you normally notice is the rods and counterweights flailing about outside the frame. In a rear view of the tender, it's obvious the something is wrong. So keep something coupled on or don't look. I've run the K-36 so much on the Colorado NG routes that I never notice anymore that the wheels don't meet the rail. When the Sumpter Valley was released, I hadn't yet downloaded the appropriate stock. I was so anxious to get started that I generated for myself an Introductory Train Ride using the K-36 and some Colorado stock. You needn't tell Steve Thompson about this, since I only ever ran it once, honest...regards,
charlie

RE: Silverton! Yo, Charlie!

Thank You Charlie, for the edumacashun! I am learning how things work around here. I bit the bullet. Elk Park is lovely in the Fall. Marvelous route, pardner. This one is going to be lots of fun! I hear there is a K-28 coming soon so good things are in the works!Actually, I only removed the Japanese and European routes. I do have the USA routes as well as several free-ware and commercial routes on the sim. Tehachapi and Cajon get most of my action - love those warbonnet F's! They're going to have some narrow gauge competition now, though! Thanks again, everyone, for all the help and .... oh, wait a minute. I think I just heard the 487 whistle for boarding. See ya!Herb
