Hey Jim
Where's the rest of your route?
Downloaded part one but the other 12 parts don't seem to be in the library yet.
Bad timing uploading that as I have my own route to work on.
Oh well, a break of a couple of weeks to have a play won't hurt.Great to see you back BTW and my condolences from afar on your loss and if your looking for a job I'm sure we can help if you want to live upside down.Cheers

RE: PO&N800000

I think the entire route is in that one download. The number indicates the routes version, not that it's part 8 of 8 files.Try running the installme.bat file and see if the route comes up in the sim.Craig

RE: PO&N800000

He's kidding, Craig. My packaging is more efficient than most, the PO&N is actually as big as some routes that use 100 megabytes of zip files. One of them old "you had to been there" jokes.PO&N800000 – image 1

Hi Neville,Sure wish I had Jim's skill and wizardry for making a big route into a small download. I was embarrassed to upload Sea View 4 in five parts.Bill Burnett

PO&N800000 – image 2

OK, what's the secret. CG1 was a lot bigger and cg2 is getting bigger. I added back a bunch of removed tiles that weren't used for CG1 plus some new ones for the Mt. Hood branch. I need that super compression secret or algorithm.Cal Rasmussen

RE: PO&N800000

Hi Cal,Sniper can achieve things the rest of us never will. That is why he is the "Coconut Wizard". PO&N800000 – image 3PO&N8 uses six different batch files. Maybe one copies a bunch of stuff from Columbia Gorge and another uses files from Sea View. Bill Burnett

RE: PO&N800000

What a coincidence, I just finished installing
version seven of PO&N when I saw this message.I like the signalling system and wayside signs,
I was able to avoid running off the end of track
at the switchback, turn the engines on the clearly
marked wye and head back to Johnstown. I also
downloaded a bunch of activities, but they turned
out to be for version five. I mention it only
because I wanted to express my appreciation for
the fact that the necessary add-on rolling stock
was included with the activities.I was very pleased with how smoothly the install
went and look forward to downloading version 8
as soon as I can get into the file library. Thanks to a recent update, winXP home now works
with my cable modem.Lloyd

Secret???

http://www.train-sim.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=3982&forum=DCForumID6&archive=yesNot much of a secret, Cal, the trick is to compress everything you can, eliminate ridiculous stuff (like a garbage can with 1.5mb of seasonal textures), and steal default textures whenever possible. If you look at the cityblocks I used, for example, I cloned those from John Milligan's cityblocks, and instead of using his texture or creating my own, I spent a couple of hours going thru default textures to find some that worked.Route Riter is a great tool (an ESSENTIAL tool for any route developer, IMAO), but it doesn't get everything - As packaged by Route Riter, PO&N8 was 23 megabytes.call copy ..\Europe2\Terrtex\OEMountM.ace .\Textures\po4rock.ace
call copy ..\Europe1\Terrtex\OEdirt.ace .\Textures\PVterrain.aceThat's two custom objects, some rocks and Phil's berms, that I deleted the ace files for and copied a default terrtex for them. I want a dead tree, and some leafless tree textures already exist in the defaults, just gotta move them to the right place.call copy ..\Europe1\Textures\Winter\tree1.ace .\Textures\deadtree1.ace
call copy ..\Europe1\Textures\Winter\tree1.ace .\Textures\Spring\deadtree1.ace
call copy ..\Europe1\Textures\Winter\tree1.ace .\Textures\Autumn\deadtree1.ace
call copy ..\Europe1\Textures\Winter\tree1.ace .\Textures\Springsnow\deadtree1.ace
call copy ..\Europe1\Textures\Winter\tree1.ace .\Textures\Autumnsnow\deadtree1.ace
call copy ..\Europe1\Textures\Winter\tree1.ace .\Textures\Winter\deadtree1.ace
call copy ..\Europe1\Textures\Winter\tree1.ace .\Textures\Wintersnow\deadtree1.aceJust those 3 objects, I save 1,731kb worth of ace files by copying defaults. And ace files are the biggest killer, because they don't compress very much in the zipfile.

PO&N800000 – image 4

Herein lies a problem. PO&N(1-8) is/are a ficticious route. You can get away with using many, if not all, default textures including terrain textures in it. My route is a prototypical route. CG1 has about 200 custom terrtex files in it! Most of these are composites of two or three default textures.I am just starting to play with Mosaic. Maybe, in addition to allowing more than one texture on Distant Mountains, it can manipulate ground textures in a manner that reduce the number required.Another difference between PO&N and CG is sheer size. PO&N is just a few tiles where CG is several hundered tiles.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Secret???

Hey Jim
You coulda saved almost another meg in the shapes folder. (Yep, already going through the files looking for tips of the trade)
I see you have been using shape file manager but left a few backups that are created in the folder, you can delete those for a bit more space saving.
Gotta say the route is a lot of fun but it's darn well costing me more time from my own work.
Also need a top up for the wipfell tank, do you take visa?Cheers and well done.
