How many route builders use sidewalks in communities? The route I'm working on will have many rural communities with a downtown business districts, and I'd like to have sidewalks. I've tried using a piece from a house in the file library called ryanwalk.s, but it's tedious to lay so many sidewalk pieces, and before long, I'm maxing out on my tile object count. I've tried the 1 lane gravel road sections, but then I run into track database troubles. So, what do route builders use for sidewalks? What I was thinking would be nice is if the maker of Dumb roads or Blank roads could create nice sidewalk segments about the width of the 1 land gravel road segments or maybe slightly smaller (or both to use for wide sidewalks like one would see in a business district and standard width segments for use in residential areas). I'd do it myself, but I don't have any 3d modeling software or experience making MSTS objects.

RE: Sidewalks

Personally, I don't use them because they add too much to the object count....which equals a crashed editor. Besides object count, they also add to the load on the frames per second as the computer must calculate the three diminsional view of each sidewalk piece individually whenever the train is within 2KM of that location. The only way I would even consider it would be if they were actually part of a larger object, such as a building so that the object count would remain constant. I had considered putting them in the housing blocks I placed in the file library, but didn't. I just didn't think it is worth the trouble. Most rural Arkansas neighborhoods don't have sidewalks anyway and that is what I built the objects for.You could also paint each terrain tile...again is it worth the effort?
Another idea is to replace the default street sections with sections with the same name but with curbs and sidewalks attached. Dumb roads could also be made that way.How much of your downtown business district is visible from your moving train? Usually not that much.If you decide to go for it, I would love to see how it turns out!

I've decided to move my route to Arkansas, a state I plan to move to in a few years, and I'd love to include the braced green metal sign posts I've seen on just about every road sign in the state.>How much of your downtown business district

There is a concrete slab (JP2CSLAB) in the Japan2 route. I have been using it as sidewalk. It covers a fair piece of ground, but it does tend to get “work intensive” after a while. I haven’t finished my Main Street either.Like yourself, my learning curve hasn’t progressed to the modeling level yet.Have a sparkling day!!

Which looks great for a residential area, but doesn't look right to me in a downtown Midwestern community business district. I did try reskinning the residential road sections, but I still didn't get the desired effect I was looking for. I know MSTS has its limitations, but I am somewhat of a stickler when it comes to work I do myself. I'd never nitpick another person's route, but I'll nitpick my own work to death.

RE: Sidewalks

Something like this...
Sidewalks – image 4Highlighted section is a 50m 2-lane road. The rest is a one-piece parking lane/sidewalk attachment shape. The alignment would be the same fashion as the bridge sections that I have done. "GeoffMayo" is working on an upgrade to MSTS Poker that would align these for you.Steven

RE: Sidewalks

That is exactly what I am looking for. Am I to understand that this is a work in progress? If so, will it have intersection pieces?

RE: Sidewalks

At present its an idea I have for the Urban road sets. Ideally, there would be one "add-on" for each road section.
