Hey folks,
Has anybody installed Gmax lately? I downloaded the update (V2.1), installed it, installed the Train Sim gamepack, and registered with Discreet.
It's been about 5 hours since I registered and I haven't recieved the installation code yet.
I tried to contact support, but apparently, the only support for the product is public forums. I registered for the forums, but haven't recieved my password yet.
While browsing the forums, it seems that there are a lot of problems with initializing the software with the code they send, if you ever get it.
Anybody else run into this problem?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Hawk

Last night I heard an old freight whistle blow, as I was sleeping warmly in your bed-And it told me "Boy, it's time that you was packin' up to go.", but I smiled and shook the leavin' from my head.

RE: Need advice with Gmax

Somethimes it seems that they only send out the codes once a week. I have installed on several computers. I once registered under 5 different names because I didn't get a response and then got all five the same day a few days later. Other times the response was right away. They also keep track of registration in a cookie of all places so if you delete all your cookies or don't allow them to save as any sane person would, the program will begin to prompt you to re-register every so often when you open it.Larry

Hey Larry,
Thanks for the info. I guess, with it being freeware, it's not on the top priority list.
I read somewhere, that if you register more than once, with the same e-mail address, it confuses their system and you won't get the authorization code(also stated they're working on that).
I'm referring to V1.2. I have V1.1 on another drive, and it works fine. No code required, but registration necessary. That may be why I can't get the code for 1.2.
I'm going to set up a new e-mail address and try again. Maybe I'll get the code in a day or two.
I know about the cookie. I use a cookie monitoring thingie (Cookie Pal http://www.kburra.com/ ) and I keep a tight tab on cookies. Personally, I'd rather delete the cookie, and deal with the prompt (you can just hit continue, and it still works).
BTW! Is there much difference in V1.1 and 1.2?Hawk

RE: Need advice with Gmax

I only really learned to use it after V1.2 was installed so I don't know what V1.1 was like. I don't use it often enough to ever get good at it. I have to constantly look up how to do something in my notes just to get by.
Right now I am trying to figure out a way to change the characteristics of how the texture .ace file was applied (for example from miplinear to linearmiplinear) without having to repaint the texture on the object or uncompiling the .s file and changing it with a text editor. Changing it in the .s file means you have to re-do it every time you make an edit to the object.
Also I wish I could find a way to import TSM's .dsp files. If anybody knows of a way to do that, please post!Larry

RE: Need advice with Gmax

Well, I've tried 3 different (valid) e-mail addresses and still nothing. I can't even get properly registered for the forums. They won't send the password.
I think I'll give up on V1.2 and stick with V1.Hawk

I don't remember having to go through this mess when I upgraded to 1.2 of Gmax, but I supposed they have changed their process. There is a good probability that the registration info is the same for everyone, so if you can get that info from someone else, give it a try.Martyn T. Griffin

RE: Need advice with Gmax

Apparently, the registration info is time sensitive. I tried Larry's and it said it was no longer valid.
This is crazy. I guess they put Gmax on the back burner.
Luckily, I still have V1.0. That should do me fine, and it works.
Thanks for the help guys.HawkForgive any spelling mistakes. This hard drive, with Win 98, hasen't been updated to 128 bit encryption, required for "iespell" to work, and I'm a little leary of IE 6. Last time I tried it, my connection was as slow as dial-up.

RE: Need advice with Gmax

Good news. Even though I can't post at the Gmax forums, I can read posts.
I found a work-around that fixes the registry.
Now, Gmax V1.2 works.
Apparently, Discreet knows about this work-around and doesn't mind folks using it. I guess it saves them the excruciating trouble of responding to the registration.Hawk
