Before you continue, take a few moments/hours to search/read this forum for references to the - combined.ref - file/procedure. These messages will explain what you need to do to start building a route. Also search for JMSteven_W98. Read all messages that Jim posted. You've got all the time in the world Matt! Start by reading this stuff and you'll save yourself a world of grief.David

Yes it all sounds pretty complicated but... the problem is that the route template as it exists has very few objects in it. The basic procedure in the 'combined ref' is:(There are several ways to do this, some better and more careful than I do but this is a quick and dirty way and it will get you started. Later you can refine the process.)

1. Go to the file library and search for: comboref.zip
This is the .ref file that will 'make it all work'. Unzip it, read the readme file and follow the instructions. 2. Copy the SHAPES, TERRTEX, TEXTURES files from EACH ROUTE to the dir of you route. Each time you paste you will add more objects. ( some objects will be overwritten and lost but you'll still 'have plenty'! )Go slow and be patient with yourself. You are smart enough to do this, believe me! If I can do it then you can...David

Aug-15-01, 08:40 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Template files" I did all of that Jazz, followed the instructions and now have a huge directory ready for my route. But I still cannot get any joy fom the template part of creating a new route. What do I have to specify as the template, is it a default file, or a specific file relating to my route???Thanks again

Aug-16-01, 06:03 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Template files" Hi Matt,It seems like you are having trouble just getting started. We've all been there ... Open the route geometry extractor, click on file\new route. This brings up a window with the source template location highlighted. I would suggest leaving this as the default for now. Type in a route name and a directory name (no paths .. just names). You can include spaces if you wish. I am modelling the Reading & Northern route for instance, so I used Reading & Northern for the route name and Reading for the directory. I also typed Reading & Northern in the edit description box although this isnt necessary. If you are going to use electric power click the check box but leave the other stuff as default for your first try. Then click OK and your system will be busy for a time while the new directory and template files are created on your hard drive. A new directory has been created under Train Simulator\Routes\Directory Name and you'll get a message box that the route was successfully created. Next pull down File\Select Route and pick your new route. Create a new quad tree under file and zoom a region where your route will live. (put the mouse where you want and right click - zoom region). If it's the US, for instance, then you'll get a closer shot of the entire US divided by blocks. Put your mouse in the block you want to zoom into and right click zoom region once more. Last right click and zoom window in 3 times until it won't go further. This is the highest zoom possible. Find the place where you wish to add terrain tiles and left click\drag to create a box. Right click inside that box and choose add all selection tiles. You now have a bunch of boxes. To add a particular tile to your route put the mouse over it, click, and then right click\toggle populated state. This places a blue X in the square. You can also draw a box and toggle populated state for larger blocks. When you are satisfied be sure to set a start tile from the right click menu. Then save your quad tree and generate flagged tiles. I don't minimize the quad tree at this point because I always have tiles to add or remove and want to see the entire area blocked to facilitate this. These tiles can be changed as you go so it's not critical that they are all correct at this point. Now you have a route with which to begin adding track/terrain etc. You'll need to close the trainsim editor before choosing the route editor section or your route won't be initialized and show up in the selection menu.Hope that helps.Ken Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
