As is good practice I back up with Norton Ghost. Be careful of terminology of drive and partition. If you restore the root of C:\ and you have your drive divided between other letters. The other lettered drives can be eliminate at least I think that is what happened to me. This is not a Norton problem but a misunderstanding of their terminology. Back to ground zero. Be careful how your backing up and how you restore it.
I am NORTON GHOST BACKING-UP Logical Drive Partitions to IMAGEs which can be located anywhere on the Hard Drive as long as that is another Logical Drive Partition, which is preferable to CLONING to another Drive of at least the same size as it is saving space, the IMAGES being compressed.Restoring such an IMAGE back to the DRIVE / PARTITION is was BACKED-UP from is no problem whatsoever.Had to RESTORE my WIN-XP Home System Drive C: a number of times, not losing anything sitting in other Drives / Partitions ! If you have a second hard drive, it is always preferable to place your ghost images somewhere on the second drive. My primary 40 gb drive is partitioned into two 20 gb partitions. I use Ghost to create images of both partitions and place the images on a second 40gb hard drive. This way, if my primary drive goes belly up, I have a way to replace both partitions.Cal Rasmussen Beaverton, OR (My email is in my profile)Columbia Gorge Route (Phase 1-- Uploaded)
Its a long story, partially trying to change to XP. I think what happened was I had an Image on CD of Windows and other junk on the C:\ part of one drive, there were other drives partitioned on the same drive which were not part of the image. I guess the image would be considered a (C:\) partition and not a drive. When I had to reinstall C:\ I think I did it as a drive and not a partition. After the reinstall was done all there was on the drive was the data from the original C:\ the other drives were gone and my back up for the other data was an zip image on those other drives. One of the dangers of these huge drives, laziness and using the other huge space for backup, a false sense of security. Obviously a separate physical drive is needed, I installed one now. What can I say, Duh! A stitch in time saves nine.
