Well, the time has come that I need to pass the standardized \global\tsection.dat file on to a new keeper of the flame. I have been finding myself with less and less time to work on it, and today I have been accepted into a Masters Degree program (21 years after finishing my Bachelors Degree).I am looking for someone who would be interested in taking over the project and continuing its growth. Over nearly two years, there have been 22 builds, with one more in the works (which I will finish), and the file has grown from 320kb to nearly 2100kb with thousands of additional track and roadway shape files referenced. I am looking for someone who is active in the MSTS community and wants to make a meaningful contribution. Knowledge of track (or roadway) building would be nice, but is certainly not essential, I've never built either. Post suggestions here, or write to me at tsection at train-sim dot com. That address will get transfered when the project gets transfered, for a more seamless transition.David Beach.Palouse & LewistonTime to Pass the Torch – image 1

RE: Time to Pass the Torch

David - I am by no means volunteering here I do want to say THANKS for all your work on this. In my view, the standardized tsection.dat is one of the most significant contributions to this community. It usually goes unnoticed and unappreciated, in large part because you've done such terrific work in making it problem free. But without it, we wouldn't be able to freely exchange narrow gauge routes, routes with curved turnouts, or any other piece of non-default track. Take a bow! Thanks again, and best of luck in the Master's program!Andy

David:Not has your work been some of the most important to take place within MSTS, but bringing order and consistency and a structure for all the track and road developers, has literally kept that aspect of the Sim from falling into chaos. We can't thank you enough; and the very best of luck!Bob Barrows

RE: Time to Pass the Torch

Thank you for all your contributions to the standardized file, David. If whomever steps up to the plate puts half of the work and care into the project, we'll be in good company.Congratulations on your acceptance to a Masters program. Good luck! Cheers!

Have to agree with the others.
The cooperation for the past two years has been very good.
I know it has taken a lot of time and you have done a great work of which the end-users know little. Good luck with your Masters Degree.I do hope someone will volunteer for this important position. Like two years ago I don't think myself as a candidate since I=XTracks and the standardized tsection.dat should be independent of that connection.
If no single person volunteers perhaps a small group could handle it?
Would be a real waste if the work was not continued when we have been able to keep it intact for nearly two years.

RE: Time to Pass the Torch

And double ouch --- I finished a M.S. program in Electrical nearly 41 years ago, so I will share a little of the humor.1. In my Senior year of college, (Vanderbilt, 1959/60) my mentor professor suggested and I (and others) take this new-fangle course called machine language, as well as this weird thing called FORTRAN which was to be taught using punch cards and the University's brand new IBM-650, which not only was not called a computer, but consisted of two large cabinets, 1 for the processor (hundreds of vacuum tubes, and a whopping 4K of drum memory) and 1 for the Power Supply, because he thought it might, one day, be useful knowledge. 80% of my career involved process control computers & Computer Aided DRafting, which I still do as a independent contractor to help some local signal design companies out from time to time.
2. Later another Prof. read about this rinky dink thing called a transistor that Bell Labs. had invented, and said he thought it might one day amount to something. I shudder to think how many itty-bitty transistors there are in a 1G Athlon Processor. So yes, it is tough, but I hope you will encounter as much humor doing it as I did.J. H. Sullivan

RE: Time to Pass the Torch

Jerry,There is a huge problem of too many engineers, closer in age to you than to me, who are getting ready to retire, and there is nobody to replace them. Too much of electrical engineering has become electronic engineering and those folks think that high voltage is anything over 24V. The electronics types are appalled to learn that, by definition, low voltage is anything less than 1000V, and for high voltage you have to get to 65kV.That esoteric branch of power engineering known as protection engineering is what really intrigues me.David Beach.Palouse & LewistonTime to Pass the Torch – image 6

RE: Time to Pass the Torch

>>>hundreds of vacuum tubes<<<When I took a tour of the SAGE building in Duluth, MN years ago it was the most impressive thing I had ever seen, I was just a youngin'.One huge wall with a video screen with a map of the world and computer (?) monitors all around in different levels. Great stuff. From the web site:A center contained two 55,000 vacuum tube, 32 bit, three megawatt computers. Except for their size and the fact that they consumed more electricity that the City of Moses Lake, they were a lot like circa 1987 personal computers.http://www.eskimo.com/~wow-ray/sage28.htmlGood read if you're interested in this sort of stuff.Bob
