Best way to duplicate a test route – image 1

I have a question for those Experienced Route Builders. First of all, I'm not a newbie, and have been here since the site inception. (My first upload was 6-14-2001);however, I've never fooled with the routes at all. I don't think I want to create a large new route, due to time considerations. What I would like to do is, to take "A test route"(The small semi circular, flat route I use for testing engines and consist on) and duplicate it, then try out Route editor and play around with adding scenery objects.
My question is: If a made the duplicate in my Routes folder, what references would need to be changed in the folders, other that the main folder name, to make the route appear as "A test route 2"?Or would I be better off copying the route to a different drive, editing the original, and restoring my backed-up copy when I'm done.
Thanks for your input. Later, Kyle

RE: Best way to duplicate a test route

Hi Kyle,Easiest way, assuming your first route is named MyRoute1 in folder MyRoute1, then:-Make a new folder in Routes named MyRoute2 and copy all the files from MyRoute1Then rename all the files in the second folder such as MyRoute1.ref to MyRoute2.ref etcFinally open the MyRoute2.trk file with a unicode editor and alter any instance of MyRoute1 to MyRoute2 and all should be well.

-----You are reading my signature now, don't waste your time reading it!-----
Or probably, maybe you should waste your time reading it.
Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.
Hey, look at my avatar, nice right? I drew it with my own hands holding the mouse in Paint, with the pencil tool(and the Filling tool!)!
It's a picture of me in Planet Stooopid, where everything is the same as what you call "Earth" except that we are called "aliens" in your planet.
Anyway, I warned you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted probably about 30 seconds reading it, where you could have spent the time doing better things, like maybe reading the next post below if there is one...

>RobertR .. ADF-M&RM at http://www.adfrr.com Hi Robert,You will be pleased to know I have added a button to Route-Riter which will do exactly this, say you have a route named MyRoute1, just click the 'Duplicate Route with New Name' button and you will be asked for the new name of the Route, e.g. MyRoute2 and you can also change the description of the route which appears in MSTS, e.g. New York - San Francisco v2.RR then makes a complete copy of the route in a folder named MyRoute2 and with all the appropriate files renamed to e.g. MyRoute2.ref and adds the appropriate changes to the MyRoute2.trk file.Exe only will be on http://members.optusnet.com.au/virtualtrains later today. This is a useful option when building a route, before running the Compact Route option in Route-Riter, as it gives you a second working version of the route, complete with ALL the shapes/textures which you will require there for future building work.Mike

Mike, I was actually doing some 'ribbing' there, but not surprised in the least that it is part of it now. As you said at the bottom, that will be a very useful option for getting a second working version that has everything in it. Wish I'd had it about 3 weeks ago However, it will be there for the next one RobertR .. ADF-M&RM at http://www.adfrr.com

RE: Best way to duplicate a test route

The easiest way to duplicate a Route is to create a MINI MSTS Folder somewhere else on your hard drive, copy a basic MSTS minus all other Routes into it, create Shortcuts for the duplicate Train- and Launcher.Exe -runeditor and you can work on both independently without having to edit any files. RE: Best way to duplicate a test route

The very latest Routeriter is out today (v4.2.46) and includes a button that allows you to do that with 1 click!!!
Copy Sview.exe into the RR folder and you get the facility to view any .s file..
