Well, after a break due to a few various family emergencies, I'm back at work on the SVRy! The start of the line up to Larch Summit, on the way to Whitney, was the existing tail track on the S-Wye. I tried turning a short train there and discovered there wasn't room! So, I decided to lay a few sections up the line, just for a bit more room, and it got out of hand. I should be working on more ground texturing of the tailings, tedious and boring, but tricky, and with 4 miles of tailing piles to go......... Anyway, I got carried away and put the track in up to Larch, which is about 1500 feet above the valley floor. It twists and turns, at 3-4% grade all the way, and taking a train up or down is really a challenge. I don't have any trees, stumps, trestles, or other details in, but here's a shot looking back at Sumpter Valley, from the top, with the Blue mountains in the background. The facilities up here consist of a siding, wood piles for the engines insatiable appetites, and a wye for turning helpers. The grade goes from 3.3% up to 2.7 down in about 1/4 mile, must have been interesting watching a train go over that hump! Probably pretty easy to pull one apart here too.

RE: Larches on the way to Larch Summit!

The #4, 2-6-0, #50 ten wheeler, and maybe some others will get released fairly soon. Jon Davis, who is making these superb engines is just a bit of a perfectionist, and won't release them until he's happy with the results! I know the wait is tough, but it will be worth it. He's aiming to release them roughly the same time as Tim and I finish the SVRy. Honest, it won't be horribly long now.

RE: Larches on the way to Larch Summit!

Now, that's pretty as a picture! This area seems to have it's own character apart from the mainline, from what I gather so far from your screenies. I like it. Looks like a nice camping spot! Timtimmuir@wcn.net

RE: Larches on the way to Larch Summit!

Hey Tim, This is the MAIN LINE! Sumpter was kind of a sleepy little town by the 30's. Most the revenue came out of Whitney and Austin. I agree, camping there would have been awesome, watching the trains go by.

Climbing the hill is a struggle!

Thanks Andre,I really would like to get this done, so I can play on it!The grade varies from 3-4% with many tight curves, and getting up to Larch from either side is a challenge. The Mikes, 19 and 20 were rated at 350 tons of train from Baker City to Sumpter, but only 130 from S Wye to Larch. The mallets could handle 60 empties to S Wye, but only 30 to Larch, so they doubled the hill or had a helper!
Leaving Sumpter Valley, Progress? – image 7Leaving Sumpter Valley, Progress? – image 8I've run out of steam with the #50 (not yet released), 1/4 mile from the top! The tracks are only about 3 miles from Whitney, and once there, we'll have 43 miles of mainline and several logging spurs. The switches and a bit of track will be in for most logging spurs, but they are a tangle like logging roads, and to do them all would add at least 400 miles of track!
