RE: Buffalo Southern beta2 released

looks great Enocell - I just downloaded the beta...it makes no difference to railroad operation, but during the era you're modelling, there was a landmark highway bridge named after Father Baker where the skyway crosses the canal in the second picture. I just did a google search for a photo, but the only site that looked at all promising was the one I sent a link to previously, and some of the photos there still don't load.thanks again for creating some great memories...Tim Baldwin

I have one photo which shows the Union canal and there's only one road over it. That bridge is pretty low and it has to be some kind of lift bridge because there's many ships behind it.

RE: Buffalo Southern beta2 released

the comment on the bridge was certainly not intended as criticism, just information. the current Father Baker Bridge is but a mere ripple in comparison. I would guess that the old bridge rose a couple of hundred feet or more in a long arc, but it's a minor detail...now to explore the route...Tim Baldwin

When the old bridge was demolized? The photo is the one from
http://zwwb.50megs.com/photo.html, it says the photo is from late 40's.
Otherwise I would change the bridge, but there was tdb problem in that spot, before I changed the start tile. Rebuild always broke the old road, one piece was always missing. Now it does that in a place near Hamburg, and that piece is far away from tracks, and in the forest.

RE: Buffalo Southern beta2 released

the old Father Baker Bridge came down after Republic Steel closed. For a while, in the early '90s, skyway traffic was detoured onto Fuhrmann Blvd at Tifft St and across a temporary bridge that spanned the Union Ship Canal. Here's the most pertinent info I could find: "The Union Ship Canal project is a Brownfeilds redevelopment plan that was started with City of Buffalo seed money for the demolition of remaining steel mill structures. Roadwork and sewers were already set to begin construction at the site in the fall of 2,003. The property's industrial past began nearly 100 years ago when Frank H Goodyear had the canal dug for his Susquehanna Iron Company operations. A connecting railroad called the Buffalo & Susquehanna brought in coal from Pennsylvania to feed the furnaces while lake ships delivered ore to the docks along the South side of the canal. The Pennsylvania Rail Road also operated a classic Great Lakes style ore dock at the site with a rail road track loop, Brown Hoists, and Hulett unloading rigs. The Pennsy left the property many years ago, but the pig iron plant stayed in operation until the early 1980's when National Steel finally shut them down. The high level Father Baker Bridge over the canal was cut down in the 1990's, effectively limiting any vessel traffic to tug-barges anywhere East of Rt. 5."Tim Baldwin

Thanks for the info. It would be nice if someone would make those huletts used in the BS mill.
I extended the tracks and some roads to Gowanda, and the Tdb rebuild still works, but it removes one road piece from rdb near Gowanda. the piece is still there, but without those rdb lines.Do you know if there's a level crossing just before the Cattarugus Creek bridge in Gowanda? the satellite image is a bit obscure. Anyway, I made the road to go over the tracks because the grade makes the level crossing really hard to make (impossible). I can't get the road to lineup with the tracks, the other side sinks always to the ground below tracks or the opposite side is floating in the air

RE: Buffalo Southern beta2 released

it's been years since i've been to Gowanda, but I know there is a road with a grade level crossing that runs along the south side of the creek and passes in front of the Gowanda depot where the NY&LE was/is headquartered (I'm not sure whether it still exists or has become part of the WNY&P). I suppose that's not necessarily good news.Another bit of trivia: for many years, starting in the mid-80s, a Pennsy I-1 decapod was stored on a siding at the end of Union St in Hamburg. the building at the end of the street housed a model railroad/wood stove emporium called the Stove Shop. I'm not sure if they're still in business...Tim Baldwin

Tim,
regarding the Pennsy decapod...its still there. that decapod, #4483, is the loco i use in my signature. It is also the loco where i got all my measurements for the loco that BLLW built. I contacted the owner and he sent me more pic's and blueprints than you can imagine, along with me going there and measuring for myself and takin pix. Hey...why dont we model that into the route. You could use are loco as an object?? and model the station?? What do you think?

Thanks,
Jim

I can add the locomotive if I get the model. Does anybody have track diagrams of the yards? The map I have is from 80's I think. That bridge will be left there because it's not possible to have a good looking grade crossing at that point. The road piece must be turned sideways and that would cause a gap in the road.

Tim, yes it is a shame that the loco is just sitting there rotting away, like alot of their stuff is (cabooses, rolling stock etc.) However it is not neglected. The loco is maintained, the society washes is and greases it, and have restored the tender. But the loco has just recieved a little bit of work on the cab but thats about it. It is in sad shape, but there is Some work being done. Unfortunatly, i dont think its enough. Enocell, tell me what you need from me? As to getting a diagram of the yard, i would contact my buddy scott. He runs the society's website and has a WEALTH of info. his email is smph50@aol.com
there is alot of stuff there upon entering that yard, alot of the historical society's stuff. There is a old snow plow and alot of other cool stuff.. i would email him and ask him for some pix. that would be your best bet.

Thanks,
Jim

Enocell, when you say you need track schematics, does that mean that you need like a diagram of the yard where the I1sa is? I can contact scott and see what he can do.

Thanks,
Jim

I could use the diagrams for all yards, as there's lots of wyes and sidings along the route, but the topo map doesn't show any of them.
Even the satellite photo doesn't show the sidings. Some are visible but most aren't.

I will see what i can do, but it takes Scott awhile to answer his email, so it all boils down to how long you want to wait. However i would recomend that you contact him, i have his email posted earlier in one of the threads, as you know more specifacally what you need more than i do. But rest assured i am doing my best to get what you need.

Thanks,
Jim

Looks good but I can't access the link. I get the "page not available" message. I used to live across the river in St. Catharines and often went over to Buffalo or Niagara Falls. Would like to try this route if and when I can download it.Arrow201

Thank you very much, Mike. I didn't notice the comma at the end of the link. I should have been more observant.
I'm downloading the route now.
