Fellow Canadian Trainsimmers,From a Government of Canada announcement issued last Wednesday:"I am very pleased to announce the public opening of the GeoBase portal located at http://www.geobase.ca. November 19, 2003, designated as International GIS Day, seems the appropriate occasion to launch the GeoBase portal, which will provide Canadians with access to quality and unique geospatial data AT NO COST AND WITH UNRESTRICTED USE." (emphasis added)I haven't had time to do more than have a quick glance at what's there, but it appears that there's now complete high resolution data available for all of British Columbia and parts of Manitoba, with data for Ontario and the Maritimes in preparation. And all for free -- which is a welcome change in government policy, long overdue.

HOTDAMN!I think I may have just died and gone to Heaven!I am awaiting the promised email containing my order as I write this. Man oh man I can hardly wait! Retiling my route with 1:50,000 data instead of 3 Arcsec/90m data is what I've been dreaming of since I started my route. Thanks a MILLION for the headsup John!

RE: Canadian digital elevation data

Christmas may just have come early. Excellent sleuthing. I've downloaded the data for my route (and a bit extra just in case they change their mind in the future). Now to try to use it.........

RE: Canadian digital elevation data

This is 1 arc second data, which means it is about 30m grid spacing - good stuff. The website says the data format is modified, however it appears to be standard USGS ASCII DEM format.DEMEX will read this just fine.JohnCS

RE: Canadian digital elevation data

John,The data works perfectly with DEMEX. And looks fantastic. Can even see some of the fills and the odd tunnel portal. Now for distant mountains.

RE: Canadian digital elevation data

Great news ! I just love the way that this stuff is just filtering down ... in some ways it can only get better! Some times MSTS just knocks my eyes out with the way the lighting and the scenery interacts .. this can only help ... Now if only the darn cabs would sway jv

RE: Canadian digital elevation data

I've gone to the river so to speak and the information is there. And it's relatively easy to get even though I had a few glitches. A polite e-mail got a prompt, courteous and effective reply and since then I've received a couple more chunks of data with no problems. The only thing I've had a continuing problem is blending the data with free SDTS data for those places I'm working on where some terrain south of the border would be nice for distant mountains. It's not essential but eventually may look better.I'm too new at this to say that this is great data but it appears to me to be a lot better than the international data I bought from MapMart. I can even see some cuts and fills that I couldn't see with the other data. I can't complain about MapMart's service because it was good and the price wasn't an obstacle but why pay for what I can get free and at higher resolution.(And yes, I pay enough taxes that something should be already paid for )Bill(wmalder)AlderResurrecting the KVR one pixel at a time(and at that rate it might just take forever)

RE: Canadian digital elevation data

I found this site that was very helpful, Has a online map
viewer similar to maptech.com, gives lat. & long. for the
British Columbia section of Canada. The DEM data from
GeoBase looks very well done when compared to the photographs
in Darryl Muralt's book on the Dolly Varden Mines Railway. British Columbia Air Photo InventoryBC Air PhotoI hope this helps some of you out-Phil
