Aug-11-01, 02:17 AM (EST) "Increasing Route Editor Window Size (JPG Images included)" LAST EDITED ON Aug-11-01 AT 02:45 AM (EST)This message contains information about editing the Windows Registry. It is recommended for advanced users only.Always make a backup of the registry or at least the keys that you are modifying so you can restore them if needed.Does your current Route Editor window look like this:Message Areas - "Increasing Route Editor Window Size (JPG Images included)" – image 1
Would you prefer to see it look more like this:Message Areas - "Increasing Route Editor Window Size (JPG Images included)" – image 2
The solution is in the Windows Registry. The default editor window size (646 x 524) comes from two settings in the registry. Increasing these values will increase the "Editors and Tools" window with the menu on it.A third setting determines if the Route Editor will leave the window size alone.Important
When increasing the window size, don't forget those small windows that we use in the Route Editor. After you enlarge the main window, it will overlap and hide the smaller windows. You can move the big window out of the way to reposition those small ones. One more thing about performance - There IS a logical reason that the Route Editor window is sized small. Since the screen real estate is being increased, the video system has more to draw than before. You'll notice this with Carspawn objects or when you scroll your screen.I recommend making small increases until you find the values that work best on your system. In this example, I used Windows 98. The basic concept works with all Windows releases.Close Train Simulator or the Route Editor if they're running.Start REGEDIT.Open the key:
\HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\1.0\HWRendererMessage Areas - "Increasing Route Editor Window Size (JPG Images included)" – image 3
Locate these keys
Editor main window width
Editor main window heightChange the values to a preferred width / height. For a 1280x1024 Windows display, use 800x600 or 1024x768. That leaves room for the little dialog windows too.Locate the key
Editor main window maxChange the value from 00 00 00 00 to 00 00 00 01
(The last entry will be a one)This tells the Route Editor to maximize itself, but the Width and Height settings determine the overall size.Example: Changing a 1280x1024 capable system so the Route Editor uses 1024x768 requires these three edits.Message Areas - "Increasing Route Editor Window Size (JPG Images included)" – image 4
And, yes you DO see 01 00 00 00 here and not 00 00 00 01 as it was entered in the RegEdit dialog interface. It relates to the Intel memory addressing architecture which stores things LOW BYTE then HIGH BYTE. When Windows grew up and started speaking two-byte WORD storage, Intel maintained the logic. They're stored LOW WORD then HIGH WORD.So a decimal 1 in double-words ends up looking reversed. It's still a 1.Here's what my current route's train yard looks like from overhead using the larger settings:Message Areas - "Increasing Route Editor Window Size (JPG Images included)" – image 5For the techies out there - The images are essentially stretched to fit the larger viewport. If you modify the camera config file settings for the editor camera (move it back and change the clipping size) then you'll increase what is seen in the new window rather than seeing a larger copy of it.And for Bob F. the compass at the top is much easier to read.

"RE: Increasing Route Editor Window Size (JPG Images included)" The eyes of thousands of aspiring route editors will owe you tremendous thanks for figuring this out. What file, praytell, contains the camera settings for the editor? I didn't see any mention of it in the camcfg.dat file. Do I need to create a new entry for the editor? Is there a specific name for this camera that I may use? Aug-11-01, 07:48 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Increasing Route Editor Window Size (JPG Images included)" Excellent! I was just noticing 'things are closer than they appear' effect. While testing my route I kept seeing things I didn't catch in the route editor. Then it dawned on me that these things are much closer than they appear in the route editor. Expanding the resolution of the train editor will be a very big help! As always, great job! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Is there any way I can get the editor to run on my notebook which has a max res of 800X600? I don't care if the windows overlap as long as I can find them.

Aug-11-01, 11:46 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Increasing Route Editor Window Size (JPG Images included)" There are some Toshiba laptops here at work and I think they have the 800 x 600 limitation too. I'll have to test one of them with the game.Toshiba once shipped a video utility with laptops. I'll try to find someone in the I.T. area and ask about it.

Aug-11-01, 03:12 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Increasing Route Editor Window Size (JPG Images included)" Hi. Thanks Jim. It looks GREAT! Can the default compass be edited this way to show up bigger in the regular TrainSim views? By the way I've sent e-mail asking for the Unicode tutorial, with no answer. Did you ever get my e-mail? Thanks, best regards, Bob. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-11-01, 03:56 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Increasing Route Editor Window Size (JPG Images included)" I did get your e-mail and several other users sent requests also. I'm at work this weekend. Windows XP is complete and a project I'm on is part of the CD-ROM set that will install the O.S.Since that means my code is part of anything that says "Win XP" on it, it takes a higher priority than many other items.I'm using a voice interface to dictate my e-mail responses today. The compass item in the runtime is another kettle of fish.Hacking the registry for the Route Editor was not as great a concern since the R.E. uses a different resolution from the runtime.I'll keep looking for some way to do it.Jim Steven, MCSE

Sep-29-01, 11:15 AM (EST) 15. "RE: Increasing Route Editor Window Size (JPG Images included)" Sometimes my settings in the registry are set back to the default values. I don't know why it happens. Next time I start the editor may be at default window sizes. Does anyone know if this is made by Trainsimulator or Windows?. Where is the default registry stored.
I exported the Trainsim registry key and can easily set the larger windows again with a doubleclick. But the problem is, I always have to quit the program first and then restart is, which takes a lot of time.Regards,Daniel Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

If you minimize the route editor window to the Task Bar then maximize it, it fills the screen, WOW. I have been using it like this for quite a while now and it seems as stable as norm. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-27-01, 07:10 PM (EST) 12. "RE: Increasing Route Editor Window Size (JPG Images included)" Jim, Please check out the EditorRotationPause entry in the Windows Registry for MSTS. I thought that increasing the value will slow down the rotation of objects while pressing the arrow keys on the keypad but I couldn't see any differences. Jeffrey. Sep-28-01, 04:51 AM (EST) 14. "RE: Increasing Route Editor Window Size (JPG Images included)" Jim, I ran Windows ME Registry Editor to change the size of the Route Editor window to 800 X 600 and found out that if I minimize and maximize the Route Editor window, it fills the whole screen which was set for 1024 X 768 but after using the Route Editor to create the Staten Island Railway route, rebooting my computer when the amount of free system memory goes below 50 MB (I have CacheMan) a few times, the size of the Route Editor window went back to default size and I can't maximize the window anymore. Mind you, I am no better at using the editor but at least I can see my errors more clearly.
